The Assistant Tax Manager supports the delivery of specialist tax services in the area of research and development (R&D) tax relief. The role involves technical analysis of project expenditure, preparation of detailed supporting claims, and liaison with clients and internal teams to ensure claims are accurate, well evidenced, and submitted on time. The role provides an opportunity to develop sector-specific expertise while contributing to wider tax advisory and compliance engagements.
CoreResponsibilities
- Review technical project documentation and cost breakdowns to assess eligibility for R&D tax relief
- Draft supporting reports and claim summaries, ensuring sufficient technical detail and clear justification of qualifying activity
- Liaise with clients to gather project information, clarify technical points, and request supporting evidence where required
- Analyse financial records, project costs, and supporting data to identify qualifying R&D expenditure
- Monitor claim progress, track deadlines, and ensure all supporting documentation is complete and appropriately filed
- Assist in responding to HMRC enquiries and information requests under appropriate supervision
- Carry out technical research on relevant R&D issues to support internal knowledge and client advice
- Support the review of work prepared by junior team members and contribute to internal training where appropriate
- Ideally ACA, ACCA, or CTA part-qualified or qualified, or equivalent practical experience within a tax or accounting environment
- Strong attention to detail, particularly when reviewing cost data and supporting documentation
- Effective written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, accurate, and technically sound content
- Well organised and methodical, with a proven ability to manage competing tasks and deadlines
- Proactive, adaptable, and committed to developing technical expertise
- Confident in client interactions and comfortable discussing technical issues with a range of stakeholders
- Strong Excel skills and familiarity with financial statements and cost records
