Everyone belongs at AECOM

Australia’s and New Zealand's Defence infrastructure challenges are multifaceted, involving the development of physical infrastructure, regulatory frameworks and human capital. Our team has earned the trust of Defence through decades of consistent delivery and genuine partnership. Behind every Defence project is a team of passionate, skilled professionals who bring deep insight, technical excellence, and a shared commitment to national security.

As Technical Director, you will be responsible for leading the engineering design of complex maritime infrastructure and have experience across the Ports, Defence, Transport, and Energy sectors. You will lead a growing team and provide technical direction, design leadership and structural design oversight.

You will be responsible for ensuring engineering technical excellence and maintaining high standards of safety, sustainability, and constructability. You will be required to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team, actively engaging with other disciplines, collaborators, stakeholders, and clients, and be able to confidently and comfortably communicate structural engineering concepts through all phases of design.

How you’ll make a difference
  • Oversee the design, analysis, and implementation of structural engineering projects within the maritime sector.
  • Ensure compliance with national and international standards, regulations, and best practices.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative solutions that meet client needs and project specifications.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence.
  • Engage with stakeholders, clients, and regulatory bodies to advocate for sustainable practices and quality assurance.
The qualities that help you thrive

You will have a demonstrated track record of education and practical experience, and be suitably qualified and experienced in the design of maritime and port structures in a nuclear setting. More broadly, you will have experience designing key building components and structural systems, including concrete and steel structures, stability design, and be able to utilise and explore advanced digital workflows to achieve efficiencies and optimised design outcomes

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil, Structural or Marine Engineering
  • Minimum of 10 years in structural engineering, with a focus on maritime projects and NSQEP standards.
  • Chartered Engineer status, or professional member of a relevant professional body.
  • Demonstrated experience in the planning, assessment, analysis, design and remediation of maritime structures.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing complex projects and meeting delivery requirements.
  • Proven experience in multi-disciplinary project environments with a focus on ports, defence, or safety‑critical.

Due to the nature of the projects, Australian Citizenship is required, with prior (or current) defence clearance highly regarded.
