Wind Turbine Technician Apprenticeship

RWE Renewables offers motivated people the opportunity to launch a career in renewable energy. This 3‑year apprenticeship scheme will develop selected candidates into technicians working on wind turbines. The first 2 years will be at one of our apprenticeship providers:
Coleg Llandrillo, Rhyl in North Wales or IPS International, Rochester.

The 3rd year will involve on‑site training with the Major Component Team, handling component exchanges (gearboxes, generators, transformers, blades, blade bearings) across multiple platform types and locations, from a jack‑up vessel.

About the role

We will provide a comprehensive and well‑supported learning programme, including classroom learning and on‑site experience with our technicians. Upon completion, you will obtain an NVQ level 3 qualification in Engineering.

Our Wind Turbine Technicians work as part of a team focused on providing service to multiple offshore wind farms. Successful candidates will learn to carry out all aspects of wind turbine maintenance—including scheduled, unscheduled, proactive, and troubleshooting maintenance—and then focus on heavy‑lifting and component exchange capabilities.

Your work ensures wind farms generate power for households and businesses. It is a rewarding job that lets you work on advanced machinery in a challenging environment. Once trained, you will work at sea, in all weathers and at height, using heavy, complex mechanical and electrical equipment. You will be required to demonstrate a commitment to Health and Safety in all aspects of your work.

Initially, the focus will be learning and developing engineering knowledge through education and training. In the longer term, tasks include:

• Electro/Mechanical problem solving of wind turbines, working in small teams at height in remote locations with user manuals as reference
• Working with advanced mechanical, hydraulic and electrical equipment safely
• Planning in advance the tools, spares and materials needed for each job
• Fault finding and diagnosis of wind turbine main component condition to assess whether site repair is possible or an exchange is required
• Ongoing personal development and training to become a multi‑skilled technician covering all inspection, maintenance and repair tasks

Candidate Requirements

The Major Component Team is an established team within Offshore Operations responsible for large complex exchange tasks across the RWE portfolio.

The team operates 24/7, 365 days a year. You will be part of a team that performs exchanges from a jack‑up vessel, working 14 days on, 14 days off, rotating between ports in the UK and Germany.

You will be keen to learn and undertake a practical role. Due to the high complexity of the role, standby or on‑call may be required.

Job requirements and experience

• Willing to undertake international travel to the service ports
• Willing to work shifts, staying for up to 2 weeks on a jack‑up vessel

All apprentices will study full time for the first 2 years at Coleg Llandrillo, Rhyl in North Wales or IPS International, Rochester
, before being deployed to one or more wind farms supported by the fleet SOV for the 3rd year for hands‑on experience.

Accommodation will be provided during term time for the first 2 years, along with travel expenses for two journeys per month between the home location and the term‑time address.
