Wind Turbine Technician ApprenticeshipRWE Renewables are offering the opportunity for motivated people to begin a career in renewable energy with us. This 3‑year apprenticeship scheme will enable the selected candidates to develop into technicians working on wind turbines. The first 2 years will be at one of our two apprenticeship providers:
Coleg Llandrillo, Rhyl in North Wales or IPS International, Rochester. The 3rd year will consist of on‑site training from the Major Component Team which supports component exchanges such as gearboxes, generators, transformers, blades and blade bearings across multiple platform types and locations, conducted from a jack‑up vessel.
We will provide a comprehensive and well‑supported learning programme including classroom‑based learning and experience on site working with our technicians. Completion of the apprenticeship will result in an NVQ level 3 qualification in Engineering. Our Wind Turbine Technicians work as part of a team focused on providing a service to multiple offshore wind farms. Successful candidates will learn to carry out all aspects of wind turbine maintenance including scheduled, unscheduled, proactive, and troubleshooting maintenance on wind turbines.
Following on from these successful candidates will then focus on heavy lifting and component exchange capabilities.
Your hard work will ensure our wind farms continue to deliver power to households and businesses. It is a rewarding job that allows you to work on highly advanced machinery in a challenging environment. Once trained you will be working at sea, in all weathers and at height, using heavy, complex mechanical and electrical equipment. You will be required to demonstrate a commitment to Health and Safety in all aspects of your work.
Initially the focus will be upon learning and developing engineering knowledge through education and training. However, examples of the tasks covered as technicians in the longer term include:
- Electro/Mechanical problem solving of wind turbines working in small teams at height in remote locations with user manuals as reference
- Working with advanced mechanical, hydraulic and electrical equipment in a safe manner
- Planning in advance the tools, spares and materials required for each job to be completed
- Fault finding and diagnosis of wind turbine main component condition to assist in determining if site repair is possible or whether the unit requires exchange
- Ongoing personal development and training to become a multi‑skilled technician that will cover all aspects of inspection, maintenance and repair of the wind turbines
The Major Component Team is an established team within Offshore Operations that is responsible for large complex exchange tasks across the RWE portfolio.
The Team performs services 24 hours a day 365 days per year. You will be part of a team that performs exchanges from the jack‑up vessel working 14 days on 14 days off rotation from ports in the UK and Germany.
You will be keen to learn and undertake a practical role. Additionally, due to the high complexity of the role it may mean standby or on call may be required.
If you require accommodation at our training facility, please note that, due to provider requirements, candidates must be aged 18 or over by August 2026.
