JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher – Primary

    • As directed by the Principal or Board, perform duties reasonably assigned
Planning
  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons
  • Teaching, setting and marking work for pupils assigned to the teacher
  • Assessing, recording and reporting on pupil development, progress and attainment
  • General
    • Promote general progress and well‑being of pupils assigned to the teacher
    • Provide advice and guidance on educational, social matters, further education and careers; supply information on expert advice; maintain records and reports
    • Record and report on personal and social needs of pupils, unless such disclosure would compromise the teacher
    • Communicate and consult with parents of pupils
    • Communicate and cooperate with approved external persons or bodies
    • Participate in meetings relating to these purposes
    Assessment / Reporting

    Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references for pupils and groups, unless such disclosure would compromise the teacher.

    Staff Development / Professional Development
    • Participate in staff development schemes and performance reviews
    • Review teaching methods and programmes; engage in further training and development
    • Advise and cooperate with the Principal and other teachers on course preparation, teaching materials, programmes, methods, assessment and pastoral arrangements
    Discipline / Health and Safety
    • Maintain good order and discipline; safeguard health and safety while on school premises and during authorised activities
    • Participate in meetings relating to curriculum or administration, including pastoral arrangements
    Public Examinations

    Arrange and assess pupils for public examinations; record and report assessments; supervise pupils during examinations.

    Review and Development of Management Activities / Administration
    • Contribute to selection and professional development of other teachers; coordinate or manage work of other teachers; participate in management and development of curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions
    • Participate in administrative tasks related to duties; manage/support staff; order equipment and materials
    • Attend assemblies; register pupils’ attendance; supervise pupils before, during or after sessions
    Number of days / Hours of Work
  • Full‑time teacher: available for work on 195 days per year, not more than 190 of those involving classroom teaching
  • Teacher not in a residential establishment: available for duties at times and places specified by the Principal; 1,265 hours per year excluding preparation, marking and travelling
  • Teacher may not teach or supervise more than 25 hours in any week in a primary or special school, and 23.5 hours in any week in a secondary school, unless under a separate contract
  • Breaks: at least 30 minutes between 12:00 and 14:00 (or 12:30 for nursery schools)
  • Staff Cover
    • Supervise and teach pupils if the teacher is unavailable, subject to enrolment and class‑level thresholds
    • Provide guidelines for cover based on school size and class level

    This job description will be subject to review in light of changing circumstances and may be adjusted accordingly. Other duties of a similar nature may be assigned from time to time.
