About The Role
The History Department at the University of Sussex is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor in Modern European History for a fixed-term position. You will contribute to a range of modules in nineteenth- and twentieth-century History. These are yet to be confirmed but are most likely to include the following modules:
- The Making of the Modern World
- The Making and Unmaking of Europe from the 1870s to the Present
- Historical Controversy
- History of Emotions
You will deliver lectures, seminars and dissertation supervision, support students, and engage in marking and assessment. You will join an innovative and collegial History Department with a strong commitment to interdisciplinary study and global and comparative approaches to historical enquiry. We were ranked 4th for Impact in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework.
About YouWe expect you to hold a PhD in some aspect of Modern European History (excluding the history of the British Isles). Expertise in one or more of the following fields will be a distinct advantage for this position: globalised histories of modern Europe, histories of genocide, histories of emotion.
You will possess substantial teaching experience in the UK HE sector. You will have an emerging publication profile, good communication skills and a demonstrable capacity for supporting students. Experience of the supervision of undergraduate dissertations is desirable. An ability to work productively as part of a friendly, team-oriented Department is an essential skill for this role.
