We are recruiting on behalf of a welcoming and inclusive primary school based in Southend-on-Sea. The school is seeking a committed Pastoral Support Assistant to provide emotional, social, and behavioural support to pupils who require additional guidance to thrive in school.
This role is ideal for someone with experience in pastoral care, SEMH, behaviour support, youth work, or care settings, who is passionate about supporting younger children to overcome barriers to learning.
The RoleAs a Pastoral Support Assistant, you will work closely with pupils across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, helping them to develop emotional resilience, positive behaviour, and confidence within the school environment.
Key Responsibilities- Providing targeted 1:1 and small-group pastoral support
- Supporting pupils with SEMH needs, emotional regulation, and social development
- Assisting with the implementation of behaviour support plans and intervention strategies
- Supporting pupils during lessons and unstructured times such as break and lunch
- De‑escalating situations using restorative and positive behaviour approaches
- Promoting attendance, wellbeing, and engagement in learning
Building strong, trusting relationships with pupils and families - Working closely with teachers, SENCOs, safeguarding leads, and external professionals
- Monitoring pupil progress and contributing to pastoral meetings and reviews
The school is looking for someone who:
- Has experience working with primary-aged children with behavioural or SEMH needs
- Is calm, nurturing, and resilient
- Has a strong understanding of positive behaviour and trauma‑informed approaches
- Can build supportive, professional relationships with pupils, staff, and parents
- Is proactive, reflective, and able to work effectively as part of a team
- Experience with in education, alternative provision, youth services, or care settings is highly desirable but not essential for the right candidate
- A supportive and well‑led primary school environment in Southend-on‑Sea
