Teacher of English

We are actively seeking a well-qualified and inspirational full time English teacher for September 2026. This position arises owing to expanding pupil numbers and changes to the structure of our staffing, both within the department and across the College as a whole.

The successful candidate will be able and willing to teach the subject across all year groups, with the possibility of involvement in either or both A Level courses alongside our GCSE programme and teaching in younger years. This position will ideally suit someone with a strong academic track record, a passion for the subject and an ambition to gain experience in a successful school with the very highest standards and expectations.

The successful candidate will be hard‑working, demonstrate strong collaborative skills, and have the drive to develop their own teaching skills as well as to share good practice with colleagues.

The English Department is one of the largest in the College, currently comprising six full-time and three part‑time members of staff, and continues to expand. A majority of GCSE students will complete both the Language and Literature courses, with the department recently moving to the AQA specification for both. We also run two popular A Level programmes, offering English Literature (AQA) and English Language (Edexcel).

We are a very supportive team, keen to share resources and best practice. Our schemes of work are detailed, modern, and provide a range of differentiated activities to support teaching and learning, also allowing staff the freedom to explore their interests and bring the subject to life. Teachers have access to a wide range of internal and external CPD opportunities.

The students at Denstone are motivated and keen to succeed. We regularly run theatre trips, public speaking and debating competitions and a student newspaper to extend learning beyond the curriculum. Tookey's, the English teaching block, provides the department with exceptional teaching and learning facilities, including interactive SMART boards and visualisers in every room. We frequently access the College library to support learning.

This position will involve teaching a full academic timetable (currently 27 x 40 minute periods per week) across the Denstone teaching week (including some Saturday morning lessons). All full-time staff at Denstone serve as house tutors and also make a commitment to the school's extra‑curricular programme: a willingness to be involved in such activities will be advantageous.
