Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Teacher of Classics to start in August 2026.
DepartmentPupils at Brighton College have a great passion for languages and the ancient world, making Classics a thriving and vibrant department. The department currently consists of five full‑time members of staff and Latin is taught as an optional language throughout Years 7, 8 and 9. Almost 100 pupils take the subject at GCSE, 25 of whom are also taking Greek in our combined 'Gratin' course.
Greek is currently introduced as an after‑school enrichment activity in Year 9, and there are 20 pupils taking A‑level Latin across the two years of the Sixth Form. The school follows the OCR syllabus for both GCSE and A‑level.
Academic results are consistently outstanding; in recent years we have regularly achieved 100% grade 9‑7 at GCSE in both Latin and Greek, and 100% A*-A at A‑level in both subjects. The department also offers a dedicated university and Oxbridge preparation programme, as well as bi‑annual trips to Italy, Greece or Sicily for Year 10+ pupils and an annual Sixth‑Form Reading Week to Rome or the South of France.
Theatre trips are also organised for Sixth‑Form students.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach Classics across the curriculum, ideally offering both Latin and Greek from Year 7 through to A‑level. An ability to contribute to the department’s extension programme, including supporting pupils with university applications to leading institutions such as Oxford and Cambridge, will be an advantage.
All teachers in the department are expected to assist in the development of schemes of work, the creation of teaching resources, and the compilation of content for our Microsoft One Note Notebooks and SharePoint. Teaching Classical Greek to GCSE and beyond is a preference but not essential.
All teachers are required to contribute to the school’s pastoral system as a tutor in one of the sixteen houses (six boarding houses and ten day houses).
Teachers are also expected to contribute to the co-curricular life of the school through the extensive Games programme and/or leading one of over 100 school societies. Participation in the weekly Masterclass programme, which celebrates learning through personal academic or cultural interests, is encouraged.
Newly appointed teachers receive guidance from an experienced mentor during the probationary period and are supported to undertake continuous professional development throughout their time at the College.
