Position: CF (ST4) in Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine (50/50) | Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

We are looking to recruit a motivated Senior Clinical Fellow in Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM).

This post is available from 5th August 2026 for 12 months and is not recognised for PHEM subspecialty training. The role may be eligible to count towards emergency medicine higher specialty training time as an OOP‑T in negotiation with your own training deanery if applicable.

This exciting new post is aimed at providing training and experience in pre‑hospital emergency medicine, alongside working as a Senior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine within a DGH Emergency Department.

The job is designed to be an enjoyable, CV‑enhancing post attracting high calibre candidates.

The Emergency Department and Urgent Treatment Centre sees approximately 200,000 attendances per year.

The department has a 6-bay resuscitation area, a 16-bay majors trolley area, an ambulatory majors area, a minor theatre, a plaster room and a 4 bedded observation area. Recently the integrated front door project has delivered a newbuild Urgent Treatment Centre, Emergency Department and Children’s Emergency Unit with a dedicated Resus, High Care, and Majors and Ambulatory areas.

50% of the post will be in‑hospital Emergency Medicine allowing an opportunity for doctors wanting to gain experience and responsibility in not just managing patients but managing a busy department.

Emergency Medicine (50%)
  • Ensure safe and timely emergency patient care
  • Prescribe safely
  • Keep an accurate and relevant medical record (electronic notes)
  • Manage time and clinical priorities effectively
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues
  • Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care
  • Teach peers and junior colleagues, as well as medical students attached to the department.
  • Act as Emergency Physician in Charge (EPIC) in the Emergency Department, including overnight supported by a consultant non‑resident on‑call.
  • Engage in Quality Improvement activity to improve processes and patient care within the department.

Pre‑Hospital

Emergency Medicine (50%)

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • To work as a trainee Critical Care Doctor at WABA (and on an Honorary basis for SWAST) providing pre‑hospital emergency medical care including weekends, bank holidays and night shifts
  • To engage with trainers, educational supervisor(s) and medical director
  • Attend regional training days for EM and regional/national training days in PHEM
  • Comply with training requirements that mirror the IBTPHEM national training programme
  • Maintain a portfolio in line with the IBTPHEM curriculum requirements
  • Complete the DipIMC examination (if not already held)
  • Progress towards the FIMC eligibility certificate and subsequent examination
  • Attend and participate in WABA’s clinical governance meetings
  • Contribute to WABA’s organisational development through audit, quality improvement and project work
  • Comply with all policies and procedures of WABA and SWAST respectively
  • Support the ongoing development of SWAST seconded APCCs at WABA
  • Work in conjunction with SWAST personnel under the auspices of WABA to deliver education, training and mentoring
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Participate in and support SWASFT clinical governance
  • Where appropriate, provide enhanced medical skills
  • Actively participate in the delivery of education and development of enhanced pre‑hospital care
  • Maintain an understanding of JRCALC and SWASFT clinical guidelines and be aware when operating outside of these guidelines
