Overview

Consultant Obstetrician Women’s Services - Edinburgh Royal Infirmary (RIE).

Simpsons Centre for Reproductive Health (SCRH) Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Position Details

Applications are welcome for the above permanent (40 hours per week) post based in Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh Hospital. This is a substantive consultant post in obstetrics. The post holder will join a forward looking and vibrant department and play an active role in general and high-risk obstetrics in this tertiary obstetric unit.

Department and Opportunities

The department has a national and internally recognised academic department with a very active research programme and subspecialty clinical services. The post holder will have a range of opportunities to develop a special interest, which could include gynaecology sessions.

Responsibilities
  • The post holder will have a community-based locality antenatal caseload and will contribute to high-risk obstetric clinics.
  • Contribute to the core provision of obstetric inpatient and outpatient care.
  • Manage the tier 2 and 3 resident doctor rota.
  • Participate in a consultant-led service on Labour Ward, Obstetrics wards, Obstetric Triage and Caesarean section lists.
  • Engage in cross-site service development between the RIE and St John’s Hospital; sessions at St John’s may be possible as the service development is established.
  • Contribute to quality improvement, patient safety, adverse event reviews, guidelines, complaints handling, departmental and undergraduate teaching as part of SPA time allocation.
Qualifications

All consultants must meet the following requirements:

  • Full GMC Registration and license to practice; eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register.
  • Evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT for UK-trained applicants or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview.
  • Portfolio Pathway (CESR) route doctors are eligible only after substantive appointment is awarded.
  • Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.
Additional Information

NHS Lothian has a commitment to developing a cross-site service, working patterns and pathways between the RIE and St John’s Hospital. The post may have sessions at St John’s as this service development is established. Quality improvement and patient safety are a priority, with a patient-centered, multidisciplinary review process developed.

All consultants contribute to adverse event reviews, guidelines, quality improvement, complaints, departmental and undergraduate teaching as part of their SPA time allocation.
