Job Summary
The Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have an exciting opportunity for a Locum Neonatal/General Paediatric Consultant to come and join our dynamic and enthusiastic team at GWH for 6 months on a 9PA contract. This role will be focused on Neonatology (including service weeks and on calls) but also includes some General Paediatric commitments, including General Paediatric/Neonatal clinics and Paediatric Assessment Unit work, with the opportunity to develop other specialty interest areas.
The appointed candidate(s) will join an existing team of senior medical staff including Consultants. The locum position is part of the Neonatal team and is for 6 months. duties of the job
This is a 9PA locum consultant post but if you would like to discuss other job plan options please get in touch as we are keen to support flexible working. As a Neonatal Consultant you will be responsible for service provision on a consultant of the week basis for 6.5 weeks per year. There is also a responsibility to provide dedicated cover for the transitional care unit and postnatal ward, again, on a consultant of the week basis, and to act as a second on consultant for the neonatal unit during busy periods.
During that week you will also provide consultant support for the neonatal outreach team and any fetal medicine consultations needed. On the other weeks you will have outpatient clinics, including neonatal follow up and general paediatrics. During your SPA time there is an expectation that you will support perinatal governance, quality improvement, research and education across our perinatal services. We would look to support you in developing your professional management and leadership skills, as well as other areas of interest.

Clinical Duties
The post holder is required to hold a CCT or equivalent. As such the post holder should be trained in all aspects of general paediatrics and neonatology. A special interest (SPIN) in Neonatology is essential. Any other special interests will be discussed as to how they may fit into the department and will be supported as much as possible.
- Participation in out of hours consultant cover for the neonatal unit on a rota (Approximately 1:8 weekdays, 1:8 weekends). On-call responsibilities will involve multidisciplinary team working across the perinatal service.
- Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care (with secretarial support)
- There is no on-site PICU but patients are stabilised in the ED or on the adult ICU whilst awaiting retrieval with support from the anaesthetic department. Where the patient is a critically unwell baby (as a guide, under 3 months of age), the neonatal team will provide critical care skills and support for stabilisation prior to retrieval by the regional Paediatric Intensive Care WATCh team.
- Undertaking ward rounds around the neonatal unit and transitional care unit daily, aiming, where possible, for these ward rounds to be done in partnership with the baby(ie) s parents.
- Fully registered with the GMC
- CCT (or equivalent for non-UK applicants of equivalent status), or be accredited (or equivalent), and be on the GMC Specialist Register in the specialty appropriate for this consultant post at the time of taking up the consultant appointment. Alternatively, candidates can hold or be within 6 months of their CCT at interview.
- MRCPCH(UK) or equivalent
- EPALS/APLS provider or equivalent
- NLS provider or equivalent
- Level 3 Safeguarding training
- SPIN module in Neonatal medicine
- Clinical training/experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT
- Expertise in full range of Paediatric and Neonatal conditions
- Experience in neonatology and competent to manage neonates at all gestations including stabilisation of the smallest babies prior to transfer to a tertiary unit.
- ARNI provider or Instructor
- NLS Instructor
- Research and/or Quality improvement experience
- Patient safety / governance experience
- Sub-speciality interests will be supported (particular extra subspeciality interests that would be desirable include respiratory, cardiology and neurology)
