Location: Martlesham

Suffolk Constabulary are looking to recruit a Corporate News Officer to the Suffolk Corporate Communications team.

An opportunity has arisen to join a skilled, well‑motivated team and creative team and the successful applicant will play a key role in contributing to the external news agenda, issuing media releases about police activities and initiatives, generating positive coverage and awareness. You’ll also be providing specialist advice, where requested and appropriate, on media and communications issues and responding to and managing local, regional and national media enquiries, as well as dealing with sensitive and reputational issues.

As part of the team you will be working in an exciting, dynamic and sometimes unpredictable environment at Police Headquarters at Martlesham Heath, liaising with a variety of officers and staff of all ranks to tell compelling stories about the force. You'll need to be of a personable manner with the ability to write well and negotiate and present with confidence and assurance.

The successful applicant will be able to show:

Essential Criteria
  • Relevant professional journalistic, marketing or PR qualification (NCTJ or CIM or equivalent); or recent practical experience in a similar role
  • Experience of working in a fast moving media or news office, in an editorial role.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work on own initiative.
  • Evidence of ability to successfully communicate with a range of different audiences.
  • Knowledge and experience of using social media networks and Content Management Systems and digital editing technology.
  • Good keyboard skills and competency using Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to travel and attend remote locations across Suffolk/Norfolk (as applicable).
  • Flexibility regarding working hours and ability to participate in an out-of-hours on-standby Communications Officer rota (weekends and/or evenings).
Desirable Criteria
  • Thorough knowledge of legal reporting restrictions for police and media
