Overview

Job Description for a shelter security and client services role at The Salvation Army in Tyler, TX. This position involves overnight resident assistance, intake procedures, and ensuring safety and adherence to house rules. The incumbent maintains records and logs and supports facility operations to keep the environment neat and orderly.

Responsibilities
  • Building Security Responsibilities (40%): ensure clients comply with house rules; check client baggage for prohibited items; record incidents and notify supervisor of special circumstances; secure the facility and clients; operate alarms according to policy; lock and secure areas as appropriate.
  • Conduct routine facility checks to ensure doors are locked and nothing is amiss; respond to emergencies calmly per policies and procedures.
  • Intake and Discharge Responsibilities (30%): conduct client intake procedures including checks, enroll clients into the shelter, prepare and monitor intake cards, and maintain resident rosters; orient new clients and prepare case records; administer sexual offender checks, Breathalyzer testing, and drug testing as needed; prepare and distribute meal and shower tickets; assign bed numbers; distribute towels, linens, and personal hygiene items; secure and distribute client medications.
  • Housekeeping and Chore Distribution Responsibilities (30%): assign and monitor daily chores, participate in cleaning and maintenance as needed, inspect the facility to ensure standards compliance, and ensure return and accountability of Salvation Army property (linens, etc.).
  • Other Responsibilities:

    communicate with first responders in emergencies; distribute sack lunches as needed; inform supervisor of issues as they arise; perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of effective and efficient record organization and the ability to perform related tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients to control, lead, and motivate behavior.
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain effective relationships with a diverse group of people and remain sensitive to concerns.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision while enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Ability to present a positive and professional image of The Salvation Army.
  • Education and Experience:

    High school diploma or GED; one year of security or social services experience in a shelter or similar environment preferred, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Certifications:

    None.
  • Physical Requirements:

    ability to meet attendance requirements; ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English; ability to perform data entry; ability to respond quickly and calmly to emergencies; ability to perform sitting, standing, and walking with frequent changes; typical building travel within the facility; occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs.
  • Working Conditions:

    work in a residential facility with typical conditions related to noise and dust.
