Job Summary

The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist Pain Management is responsible for providing comprehensive pharmaceutical care to patients through clinical services, formulary management, development of policies and procedures, and integrated drug distribution. The individual will be responsible for precepting pharmacy students and residents and orienting new staff pharmacists. The individual may be responsible for providing recommendations and/or assuming responsibility for patient care activities, pharmacokinetics, nutrition support, or other medication regimens as prescribed by provider.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • Providing recommendations and/or assuming responsibility for pain management related activities or other medication regimens as prescribed by physician. (a) Document clinical interventions on an ongoing basis.
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of distributive responsibilities including computer functions. (b)
  • Provide recommendations and/or manage pain medications or other medication regimens as prescribed by the provider. (c)
  • Round with interdisciplinary teams (where applicable). (d)
  • Provide on-call clinical pharmacy services as needed. (e)
  • Perform medication management activities as outlined per Wellstar policies. (f)
Educational Responsibilities
  • Provide drug information when needed or requested.
  • Develop and provide educational programs/in services for health care practitioners and patients as required.
  • Participate as a preceptor/instructor for students from accredited colleges/schools of pharmacy.
  • Serve as a preceptor/instructor for the Pharmacy Residency Program (where applicable).
  • Assist in developing drug protocols.
Committees and Quality Improvement
  • Participate as a member of the Wellstar Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee, as well as other System and facility-specific committees as assigned or as deemed necessary.
  • Identify target medications/therapies, develop criteria, and implement data collection for Medication Use Evaluations (MUE) and other pain management-related studies/initiatives. Tabulate and present completed MUE data to the P&T Committee.
  • Assist in formulary maintenance by critiquing new entities, comparing medication classes, and developing therapeutic interchanges where applicable.
  • Assist in preparing for and maintaining compliance with regulatory agency (e.g., The Joint Commission) standards/requirements.
  • Monitor quality metrics related to pain management patients and develop improvement strategies as necessary.
Required

Minimum Education
  • Bachelor's Degree Graduate from an accredited college of pharmacy.
  • Doctorate from an accredited college of pharmacy.
Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s)
  • RPH – Reg Pharmacist
Additional License(s) and Certification(s)
  • Licensed by, and in good standing with, the Georgia State Board of Pharmacy or ability to obtain a Georgia State Board of Pharmacy license within 6 months of hire date within 180 Days Required.
  • Board Certification (e.g., BCPS, BCGP, etc.) Preferred.
  • Specialty credentialing (e.g., Certified Pain Educator) Preferred.
Required Minimum Experience
  • Minimum 3 years clinical experience or Completion of a PGY-1 Residency Required.
  • Minimum 2 years of clinical pharmacy experience in Pain Management/Palliative Care or Completion of a PGY-2 Pain Management/Palliative Care Residency Preferred.
  • Experience with substance use disorder, geriatrics, and/or oncology Preferred.
  • Experience with nutrition support, anticoagulation management, and pharmacokinetics Preferred.
Required Minimum Skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills. Experience with Epic, Microsoft Office, Thera Doc etc. preferred.
  • Capable of preparing and providing presentations.
  • Strong organizational skills.
