Summary
This position is for a counselor position at Hitchcock High School.
High School Counselor
Primary
Purpose:
Work with school faculty and staff, students, parents, and community to plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program at school assigned. Counsel students to fully develop each student's academic, career, personal, and social abilities and address the needs of special population's students.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification
Master's degree in guidance counseling
Valid Texas counseling certificate
Special Knowledge/
Skills:
Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Experience:
Three years teaching experience preferred
Two years counseling experience preferred
High school counseling experience highly preferred
Major
Responsibilities and Duties:
Guidance
1. Teach campus developmental guidance curriculum consistent with district's guidance program plan and tailored to campus needs.
2. Assist teachers in the teaching of guidance-related curriculum.
3. Guide individuals and groups of students to develop education plans and career awareness.
4. Hold monthly meetings with the Senior and provide scholarship information.
5. Maintain records to document interactions, interventions, and decisions.
6. Provide grade level-middle school through postsecondary-transitional activities and graduation plans.
7. Process student schedules.
Counseling
8. Conduct structured, goal-oriented counseling sessions in response to identified needs of individuals and groups of students.
9. Conduct and facilitate conferences with teachers, students, and parents, as needed.
10. Determine UIL eligibility for student athletes, and advise teachers and coaches of student eligibility every three weeks.
11. Process graduates' final transcripts, ensuring accuracy of grades, test scores, credits, signatures, and seal.
12. Facilitate registration of new students.
13. Receive and distribute all scholarship applications, assist students with preparation, and return to originator all requested documents.
14. Organize annual scholarship award program and college and career day.
15. Coordination of all testing including scheduling dates and registering students, verifying pre-coded labels and score sheets, and coordinating delivery and shipment with Curriculum Office.
Consultation
16. Consult parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant people to enhance their work with students.
17. Work with school and community personnel to bring together resources for students.
18. On a monthly basis, maintain a communication system that effectively collects and disseminates information to other professionals as appropriate.
19. Develop, communicate, and maintain positive working relationships with other school professionals and representatives of community resources.
20. Use an effective referral process to assist students and others to use special programs and services.
Assessment
21. Participate in planning and evaluation of campus standardized testing program.
22. Interpret tests and other appraisal results appropriately and communicate to school personnel, students, and their parents on a timely basis.
23. Maintain the confidentiality of student assessment.
Program Management
24. Plan school guidance and counseling programs to ensure that they meet identified needs, priorities, and program objectives.
25. Implement a comprehensive and balanced program.
26. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the guidance program and individual activities and make changes based on findings.
27. Educate the school staff, parents, and community about the guidance program through a public information program, i.e. Senior Night and mark on the district and school calendar.
28. Compile, maintain, and oversee the filing of all required physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents.
Administration
29. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in guidance and counseling area.
30. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
31. Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
32. Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents.
33. Meet monthly with Director of Curriculum and Instruction and other district counselors to review, plan, and revise counseling program.
Professional
34. Adhere to ethical and legal standards and model behavior that is professional, and responsible.
35. Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise assigned counseling aide(s) and clerical employee(s).
