Nights

Unit Layout
  • L&D Beds: 11 L&D rooms (also used as triage rooms when needed)
  • C-Section OR Suites:
    • 2 C-Section suites on the unit
    • 2 PACU recovery bays on the floor
  • Triage Rooms:
    • Typically 2 designated triage rooms
    • Approximately 4–5 triage patients/day who are discharged home (not including admitted patients)
  • Postpartum Beds: 17 beds
Birth Volume
  • Average Deliveries: 5–6 per day
  • Monthly: 150–180 deliveries
  • Yearly: ~1,800–2,100 deliveries
Staffing Ratios (AWHONN Guidelines)

The unit follows AWHONN staffing guidelines
:

  • Intrapartum: 1:1
  • Antepartum: 1:1–3
  • Postpartum / Mother-Baby: 1:3–4
Required Certifications
  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • NRP
  • AWHONN Fetal Monitoring (Intermediate or Advanced)
  • NCC Certification in Fetal Monitoring
Patient Population
  • Typically 30+ weeks gestation
  • Infants under 30 weeks are stabilized and transferred
  • Facility includes a Level III NICU supporting 30+ week neonates
Required Experience / Skills

Must Have:

  • Minimum 2 years of L&D experience
  • Some postpartum experience
  • Comfortable working in both L&D and Postpartum
  • Experience with high-risk OB patients
  • Ability to circulate in C-sections

Additional Requirements

  • Travelers with only Critical Access Hospital experience will not be accepted
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Preferred experience in similar size L&D and Mother-Baby departments
  • Epic experience preferred (must note when it was last used)
IV Drips

RNs must titrate drips

Common drips include:

  • Pitocin
  • Magnesium
  • Insulin

Insulin drip experience preferred but training available.

Leadership & Staffing
  • Charge Nurse:
    • Does not take a patient assignment unless absolutely necessary
  • Resource Nurse:
    • When staffed, assists with triage, deliveries, newborn care, and staff support
  • Management Coverage:
    • Manager and Assistant Nurse Manager cover both shifts
    • Not in house 24/7, but available on call
Support Staff
  • CST (Surgical Tech): In house 24/7
  • CNAs (Postpartum/Mother-Baby) Duties include:
    • Vital signs
    • Baths
    • ADLs
    • Patient setup
    • Blood glucose checks
    • Task assistance
Physician Coverage
  • OB:
    • In house during the day (Mon–Fri)
    • On call overnight
  • Neonatology:
    • Neonatologist onsite during the day
    • Neonatal APP coverage overnight
  • Anesthesia:
    • CRNA in house 24/7 for OB
Respiratory Therapy
  • RT available 24/7
  • Responsible for respiratory treatments and equipment (CPAP, BiPAP, vents, etc.)
Telemetry
  • Tele techs available in house
  • RNs are not required to interpret tele strips
    , but must:
    • Recognize rhythm changes
    • Identify basic and life‑threatening rhythms
EFM System
  • Epic – CPN
  • GE Connect
Scheduling
  • Shifts: 7:00–7:00
  • Schedule created: Every 6 weeks by ANM
  • Block scheduling: Considered but not guaranteed

Policy: Staff and travelers cannot work more than 5 shifts consecutively

Travelers must remain flexible to help fill scheduling gaps

Weekend Requirements
  • Every Other Weekend

Typical pattern:

  • Days: Saturday & Sunday
  • Nights: Friday & Saturday (may vary based on unit needs)
Holiday Requirements
  • May be required to participate in holiday rotation
Call / Standby
  • Travelers may be called off if needed
Floating

Primary units:

  • Labor & Delivery
  • Postpartum / Mother-Baby

Additional floating:

  • May float throughout the hospital for sitter assignments
  • Travelers are typically first to float
Dress Code
  • RNs: Navy Blue scrubs
  • CNAs: Maroon scrubs
Orientation
  • 3 days of unit orientation
  • Preceptor shifts in L&D and Postpartum/Mother‑Baby
