Overview
The purpose of this classification is to perform inspection and manual work functions associated with construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of sewer lines and the city sewer system. The following duties are normal for this classification. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.
Other duties may be required and assigned. Specific duties listed may not be required for all positions within this classification, but are determined by the normal requirements for the particular position.
- Operate motor vehicles and sewer television equipment, specifically: jet truck, rod truck, vacuum truck, sewer television truck, video camera, recorder, and related controls and cables, used to inspect construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of sewer lines.
- Inspect equipment prior to use; perform maintenance tasks to keep trucks, video equipment, and related tools in good condition, including greasing, maintaining fluid levels, changing tires, and cleaning; ensure necessary equipment repairs are made.
- Take essential precautions while performing sewer work to protect public health; inspect job site for possible hazards prior to operating equipment; clean up hazardous material spills.
- Inspect existing, repaired, and new sewer lines utilizing sewer television equipment; locate, identify, and record areas in sewer lines requiring maintenance/repair; uncover and inspect manholes and manhole covers.
- Read city and subdivision sewer system maps and engineering drawings to locate manholes, sewer lines, and service laterals for houses and to determine length of sewer lines, position of service laterals, and distance of trouble/defective sector(s).
- Inspect and verify proper installation of sewer lines by contractors; record and report deviations.
- Respond to requests for service of stopped sewer lines; unstopp various sizes of sewer lines; clear or disinfect sewer lines and yards; clean catch basins, roads, and right-of-ways.
- Repair sewer lines; maintain knowledge of sewer system including location of sewer lines, direction of flow, and use of sewer construction materials.
- Complete worksheets showing condition of sewer lines at time of inspection; prepare and/or receive various forms, reports, or other documents; forward as appropriate.
- Communicate via telephone and/or two-way radio; provide information; take and relay messages and/or direct calls to appropriate personnel; respond to requests for service.
- Respond to requests for information from officials, employees, the public, or other individuals.
- Clean and wash sewer service trucks.
- Must accomplish the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, in a timely manner.
- Perform other related duties as required.
High school diploma or GED required; three years of experience in municipal sewer system/sewer line construction, inspection, maintenance, and repair or a related field. Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with proper endorsements for assigned motor vehicles. This job classification is considered to be safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment and random drug screens.

Physical and Cognitive Requirements- PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to operate a variety of equipment, machinery and tools which may include jet truck, rod truck, vacuum truck, sewer television truck, bar, shovel, manhole poles and foot, hydraulic press, two-way radio, and sewer television equipment including video camera, recorder, and related controls and cables, and mechanics tools.
