Job Description

Sirius Staffing is seeking a Health and Safety Specialist for a direct-hire role in Tuscaloosa, AL. Under the direction of the Safety Manager, this role supports the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of employee health and safety programs. The position ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while proactively identifying and mitigating workplace safety risks. This role is primarily responsible for maintaining, evaluating, and updating programs related to unplanned health and safety events, incidents, and risk management actions.

Additional responsibilities include supporting industrial hygiene, emergency response, and overall health and safety initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain, evaluate, and improve health and safety programs related to incidents, unplanned events, and workplace risks
  • Conduct regular audits, inspections, and assessments to ensure compliance with safety policies and procedures
  • Investigate incidents, determine root causes, and recommend preventative and corrective actions
  • Track and clearly communicate investigation status, safety trends, and compliance gaps to leadership
  • Identify workplace hazards and develop mitigation strategies, including training, equipment needs, and compliance schedules
  • Support and enhance safety programs beyond regulatory compliance using industry best practices
  • Assist with emergency response planning and participate in Incident Command Structure (ICS) as Safety Officer when required
  • Provide training, coaching, and mentoring to employees and health & safety team members
  • Serve as a representative of the Health & Safety department in the absence of the Safety Manager
  • Lead initiatives that promote a strong safety culture and continuous improvement
  • Travel periodically to other locations to conduct training and related safety activities
Regulatory & Technical Knowledge
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and industry best practices
  • Working knowledge of NFPA fire protection systems and standards
  • Working knowledge of industrial hygiene regulations and standards
  • Working knowledge of risk management and loss control principles
  • Familiarity with NIOSH, EPA, and API standards preferred
Physical & Work Requirements
  • Ability to wear a tight-fitting respirator
  • Ability to climb vertical ladders and up to 14 flights of stairs
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs
  • Availability to work extended or varied shifts (days, evenings, nights) during shutdowns or turnaround activities
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and maintain on-call availability when required
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university, preferably in Occupational Safety, Safety Management, Engineering, or a related field
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in a related industry, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Refining, chemical, or heavy industrial experience strongly preferred
Skills & Competencies
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to train and present to groups at all organizational levels
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to think strategically while also executing hands-on solutions
  • Proficient with computers and spreadsheet software
Certifications
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license required
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) strongly preferred
  • Other certifications such as ASP, CIH, CHCM, or similar are a plus
