Position Summary

Classified as:
Laborer. Facilities Services is continually building a pool of applicants interested in hourly intermittent temporary employment. Multiple positions are filled as needed and appointments end on or before June 30, 2026 with the possibility of reappointment based on budget, operational needs, and job performance. Positions are normally assigned to work primarily weekends for events, but may also be assigned to alternate schedules as operational needs demand.

Hours will vary. Under the general supervision of the Grounds & Events Supervisor, the incumbent will provide general manual labor duties for the campus.

Job Duties
  • Move heavy objects and perform manual labor on campus using various moving equipment and tools; load and unload furniture, equipment, packing boxes, supplies and various materials as directed; use a variety of hand tools to dismantle office furniture and reassemble in a new location.
  • Assist in campus event set‑up (tables, chairs, awnings, etc.) and breakdown, including site preparation; support all University ceremonies, concerts, events, functions and emergency situations.
  • Remove recyclables from indoor and outdoor central locations; prepare, deliver and pick up recycling containers at all campus events and for special site clean‑up; maintain recycling containers, bins, vehicles, the Facilities Resource Center and baler site.
  • Operate 5‑wheel pickup truck and trailer unit to collect garbage, empty trash cans, run the waste compaction system, cardboard baler, blower, forklift, pressure washer and backhoe.
  • Move and relocate 800–1,000 pound wheeled dumpsters with or without assistance; push dumpsters up to 50 feet when required.
  • Perform general cleaning of campus buildings, removing construction debris, cleaning gutters, culverts, roadsides, streets and other outdoor and indoor areas; assist with construction cleanup and rough repair work.
  • Assist grounds maintenance tasks such as pruning, trimming, spraying, and removing undergrowth and debris.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to use a variety of hand tools to dismantle and reassemble office furniture in a timely manner.
  • Ability to use a wide variety of powered equipment.
  • Ability to follow all safety procedures and guidelines.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts and establish cooperative relationships with staff, faculty, students and visitors.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and organize work efficiently.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in work environment and assignments.
  • Ability to operate a 5‑wheel truck and trailer for waste management.
  • Ability to move/push 4‑yard dumpsters; pull a 75 pound bag of trash or recycling receptacle.
  • Ability to work in adverse and fluctuating conditions.
  • Ability to operate the cardboard baler.
  • May require possession of a valid California driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety.
  • Perform regular strenuous manual labor and safely move heavy items in excess of 50 pounds.
Special Conditions

Will be required to work weekends, evenings, graveyard shift and alternate schedule as required to meet the needs of the University.

Physical Requirements

  • Operate hand tools, powered equipment, 5‑wheel truck, trailer, forklifts, blowers, pressure washers, backhoes, and cardboard baler.

Salary Range
