POSITION:

Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences:
The Department of Biological Sciences at California State University, Stanislaus invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. This position will meet a critical need in Invertebrate Zoology. Stanislaus State is a Hispanic-Serving Institution with a high proportion of first-generation college students, renowned for fostering student social mobility in California’s San Joaquin Valley. We invite applicants who share our commitment to student success through our teaching, scholarship, and service to the University and local community.

The successful candidate will have expertise in invertebrate zoology. The position includes teaching duties in undergraduate courses for biology majors and could include: invertebrate zoology, parasitology, and/or entomology, as well as other courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, including new courses the successful candidate might develop. Teaching duties could include service courses including general education, or core courses in our MS Biological Sciences program.

The person appointed to the position will be expected to develop an active research program within the context of a primarily-undergraduate institution. Individuals using empirical or theoretical approaches and with a strong background in experimental design and analytical approaches are especially encouraged to apply. We also welcome applicants with specialized training and experience in science communication (especially multilingual communication) and/or biostatistics.

College of Science faculty take advantage of internal Department and University funding, extramural grant funding, and University funding for students who are collaborating with faculty. The M.S. in Biological Sciences offers additional opportunities for research mentorship and collaboration.

Effective teaching, scholarly productivity, and service to the University are required for retention, promotion, and tenure, and the department strongly encourages contributions in all these areas that promote access to advanced learning for all. As a University and Department that highly values student success, commitment to effective teaching is considered the most important criterion for hiring, retention, and promotion. The typical teaching load includes multiple lecture and lab courses each semester, as well as student advising and mentorship.

The Department also requires evidence of productive research activity and defines research to include all activities that contribute to advancing scientific knowledge and the scientific process within the life sciences, as well as the scholarship of teaching and learning. Candidates must show evidence of growth and improvement as an educator through development of practices that directly meet the needs and challenges of the varied student body of the university through culturally responsive practices that support all students.

This position is contingent upon the availability of authorized funding. This is an academic year appointment. However, opportunities exist for an additional summer session appointment.
