Job Summary

The Nursing Assistant/Unit Coordinator at North Mississippi Health Services is responsible for providing routine patient care, coordinating nursing unit activities to support effective and positive patient experience. This role engages strong organizational and communication skills to complete clerical and administrative duties, support inventory and document management, maintain accurate records, and facilitate information and communication across a range of stakeholder groups such as physicians, patients, and visitors to promote overall smooth and effective operational function.

Functions / Responsibilities
  • Effectively and efficiently coordinates the activities of the nursing unit.
  • Assists with admissions, discharges, transfers and changes within the unit using the electronic patient tracking system and electronic medical record.
  • Clerical responsibilities include performing a variety of office, secretarial and related duties within and in support of the assigned unit.
  • Manages intake and outbound documents and handles incoming and outgoing communications.
  • Responds to patients’ call lights/requests and reports requests to appropriate personnel.
  • Performs tasks related to routine patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, including activities of daily living, personal hygiene, grooming, mobility, and comfort.
  • Coordinates daily patient care activities and assists nursing staff to facilitate admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • Performs duties in support of the assigned unit as delegated by nursing staff and assists with nutrition needs (e.g., feeding, fluids, and supplements).
  • Inventory Control: orders, stocks, and replenishes unit supplies and equipment in a cost-efficient manner; assists with budget preparation and maintaining unit within budget restraints.
  • Communication: conveys patient information and concerns to appropriate interdisciplinary team members; facilitates communication among visitors, employees, and physicians; manages unit communication systems (phones, intercom, call lights, computers) as appropriate.
  • Customer Service: greets and assists customers, patients, visitors, and staff; ensures a safe and clean environment; provides directions and answers questions; maintains professional interactions by phone and in person.
  • Reporting/Recordkeeping: facilitates organized medical records and ensures timely and accurate access to pertinent patient data; maintains unit-specific records and reports as assigned.
  • Documentation: documents care provided using worksheets and/or the electronic medical record; complies with professional standards and hospital policies.
  • Regulation: adheres to local, state, federal policies and hospital regulations; maintains patient confidentiality.
  • As it relates to Telesitter Nursing Assistance/Unit Coordinator, monitors patients remotely via two-way communication; role is sedentary with limited physical interaction.
Qualifications Education
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
Licenses and Certifications
  • CPR – Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation
Work Experience / Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of computers and software programs; required
  • Must meet and maintain education requirements as determined by unit and Continuing Education Department
  • Working knowledge of office equipment (telephones, fax machines, scanners, etc.); required
  • Excellent organizational and communication (written and verbal) skills; required
  • Knowledge of medical terminology; preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; required
  • Previous nursing assistant experience preferred but not required
  • Must be able to read and write; basic computer proficiency
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage interruptions while performing duties
  • Ability to work with patients, families, nurses, physicians, and staff; maintain positive, caring attitude and customer service focus
  • Must reflect a positive, caring attitude toward patients, staff and the public
