Position: (Seasonal) Environmental Protection Specialist

Summary

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for these parks is March–November, but the season may be extended or reduced due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty:
March 22, 2026.

Duties

Major duties of the position include:

  • Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Monitoring project implementation to ensure compliance with NPS policy and federal law.
  • Communicating with NPS employees, contractors, partner organizations, and the public to foster greater understanding of the park and its resources.
Conditions of Employment
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of official duties; a valid driver’s license is required. Must also submit a Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record, and all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver’s licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • Must wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • May be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • May be required to travel overnight away from home up to 2 nights per month; must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement (01/26/2026) unless otherwise stated.

To qualify for Environmental Protection Specialist at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one or all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

Experience

At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the federal service (public or private). Specialized experience includes:

  • Documentation of federal actions for compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act and/or the National Historic Preservation Act including impact analysis, development of mitigation measures, and inter‑agency consultation.
Education

Successful completion of a master’s or equivalent graduate degree OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL.B. or J.D., if related to the position. Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above.

Volunteer Experience

Experience includes paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands

Work is primarily sedentary in an office environment, but also requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities.

Working Conditions

The majority of the work is performed in an office setting with some travel to attend meetings, conferences and workshops, or for field inspections. Work can involve moderate risks, discomforts, and unpleasantness such as exposure to dust and cold or hot and dry weather extremes and flights in small aircraft, including helicopters.

Non‑Competitive Rehire Eligibility

Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non‑competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year.…
