Overview

This is a Washington General Service position with the Office of the Insurance Commissioner (OIC) in the Legal Affairs Division, Tumwater Office. The detective (AGO Senior Investigator) serves as an expert in complex law enforcement investigations within the Criminal Investigations Unit (CIU). This recruitment may be used to establish a qualified pool of candidates for Detective (AGO Senior Investigator) vacancies in the next sixty days.

About the Position

The detective coordinates special investigations, leads task forces, leverages new technologies, collaborates with prosecutors, testifies in criminal prosecutions, and provides training and expert consultation related to financial crimes and insurance fraud schemes. The position establishes liaison with external stakeholders including federal and local agencies, prosecutors, investigators, and professional organizations.

The detective develops criminal cases toward successful prosecution and conviction. The role maintains compliance with peace officer criteria under RCW  and operates as a limited authority officer per RCW 10.93.020(5)-(6) and RCW (2).

Position Details

Salary: $6,735 - $9,065 per month. This is a Washington General Service position.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct and lead complex criminal investigations, including high-profile cases with sensitivity, potential political impact, or significant media interest. Tasks include:
    • Develop informants and sources of information
    • Establish and maintain strong working partnerships
    • Obtain and analyze insurance files, law enforcement documents, and data using emerging technologies
    • Conduct surveillance
    • Apply for and execute warrants
    • Gather, secure, analyze, and safekeep financial, digital, and physical evidence
    • Develop investigative, safety, and operational plans
    • Interview suspects and witnesses in accordance with constitutional and legal requirements
    • Prepare affidavits and detailed reports
    • Maintain expertise in insurance fraud, financial crimes, and related areas
    • Master emerging technologies and their use in investigations and data analysis
    • Interpret and apply state and federal laws and regulations
    • Apply rules of evidence and arrest, search, and seizure
Required Qualifications
  • Possess and maintain certification as a peace officer under RCW  or be eligible for equivalency per WAC
  • Eligibility for a limited authority commission
  • Eligibility to possess and carry a firearm and maintain firearms qualification
  • Washington driver’s license and REAL
    -compliant identification (for travel)
  • Seven (7) years of experience as a commissioned law enforcement officer, including at least two years in these areas:
    • Planning and conducting criminal investigations, including interviews, surveillance, arrests, and case report writing
    • Developing and maintaining sources of information
    • Applying for and executing search warrants and subpoenas
    • Handling, processing, and examining evidence
