Responsibilities
Summary
The Transportation Officer is responsible for securely transporting detainees between destinations and ensuring that the vehicles used for transportation activities are safe and properly maintained.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct pre-trip, during-trip, and post-trip inspections of all vehicles operated.
- Provide written Daily Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR) at the end of each trip or shift and report potential safety defects to the Transportation Supervisor.
- Ensure all permits and licenses are in order before beginning a trip.
- Notify the Transportation Manager of any problems before initiating a trip.
- Complete all necessary paperwork and reports accurately and thoroughly and submit them to the facility according to policies and procedures.
- Ensure detainees are properly secured before leaving a facility and while in a vehicle, and obtain all required documentation.
- Follow all safety measures and applicable federal, state, municipal and organizational laws, regulations, policies and procedures while transporting detainees.
- Immediately contact safety authorities and facility management in the event of an accident, providing detailed verbal and written information to requesting authorities.
- Deliver vehicles for servicing and pick them up when ready.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent. Possession of applicable state requisites for employment.
- Three (3) years’ experience as a Law Enforcement Officer, Corrections, Detention, or Military Police Officer.
- Minimum age 21 years.
- U.S. citizenship.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license.
- 80 hours of verified driver’s training approved by DOT.
- Completion of an approved training program with certification in Corrections, Law Enforcement, or Military.
- No preventable accidents, suspensions, or driving convictions; no more than two moving violations in past three years.
- Passing a company and DOT drug and alcohol test.
- Ability to work overtime, travel, and handle physical and mental stress associated with extended hours.
- Ability to work up to sixteen (16) hours within a rolling 24‑hour period.
- Regular attendance and punctuality.
- Capability to work with computers and required software.
- May be required to obtain a USDOT medical examiner certification after hire.
