The Heavy Equipment Service Technician Intern at Kirby-Smith Machinery is responsible for working alongside experienced technicians to learn the skills needed to diagnose and repair heavy equipment. This position offers the intern the opportunity to gain hands‑on experience, technical training, and become familiar with the distributor environment. This internship will range from 12 to 24 months, depending on the partnering school.
HeavyEquipment Intern - Service Technician Essential Functions
- Communicates and supports the Kirby Smith vision and core values of One Mission, One Team, One Plan, One Goal
- Practices and promotes safe work habits, following company policies and safety regulations
- Assists experienced technicians with diagnostics in mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems, repairs, and maintenance of heavy equipment
- Continuously learns to interpret technical documents, such as schematics, service manuals, and inspection reports
- Observes experienced technicians to learn how to properly order parts, complete service documents, and perform repair processes
- Completes assigned tasks accurately and efficiently while demonstrating a willingness to learn
- Maintains a clean and organized work area, including shop tools and equipment
- Attends training sessions, toolbox talks, and team meetings
- Consistent and reliable on‑site attendance
- Performs other job‑related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent, or currently enrolled as a student
- Strong interest in repairing heavy equipment, machinery, or related mechanical fields
- Basic knowledge of hand tools and mechanical systems
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team
- Valid driver’s license preferred
Physical Requirements
- Pushes/Pulls/Lifts/Carries up to 100 pounds
- Physical ability to squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, climb, and reach overhead
- Ability to work in extreme heat or cold and wet, damp, dusty, or windy conditions and tolerate exposure to typical noises, hazardous materials, and fumes/odors
- Physical ability to perform maintenance on equipment for extended hours, with continual mounting and dismounting throughout the workday
- Adheres to personal protective equipment (PPE) policy and maintains individual PPE in a functional condition
