** Description of Work

This is work in performing and directing the maintenance and repair of marine electrical systems on ferries and dredges. Employee is responsible for the maintenance and repair of electrical and electro-mechanical systems of ferries and dredges operated by the Division of Ferries. Work involves participating in and supervising the installation, maintenance and repair of AC and DC generators, switchboards, distribution panels, lighting and alarm circuits.

Maintenance and repairs are performed without technical supervision; however, complex electrical repair problems may be performed under the general supervision of a maintenance supervisor and are reviewed and evaluated through the continued and reliable operation of all electrical systems and their ability to meet the U. S. Coast Guard requirements.
Duties include but are not limited to:

• Troubleshoots, electrical equipment, and circuits using appropriate test equipment to detect and effect required maintenance, repairs, or replacement requirements.

• Performs maintenance and repair of generators, switchboards, controllers, circuit breakers, electrical motors, distribution panels, alarm and lighting circuits.

• Conducts insulation resistance measurements of electrical cables to determine condition and effects repairs or replacements as required.

• Supervises and participates in the installation and/or alteration to electrical systems aboard ferries and dredges.

• Maintains adequate inventories of electrical spare parts and requisitions replacements as required.

• Maintains electrical system maintenance histories notating date, and extent of repairs and/or alterations.

• Assists the marine engineer in the preparation and inspection of electrical repairs performed by outside contractors and during annual shipyard overhaul.

• This position also assists other entities in the Ferry Division and may require overnight travel.

• The employee must be able to legally operate a motor vehicle.

• Performs related duties as required by the Supervisor.
This position will work out of the HATTERAS FERRY MAINTENANCE FACILITY and works shift work – 7 days on and 7 days off.
LODGING IN STATE DORMS MAY BE PROVIDED DURING THE WORK SHIFT

*** Knowledge of marine electrical systems and required maintenance and repair needs.
* Knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices involved in the installation, maintenance, repair and alteration of marine electrical and electro-mechanical systems.
* Skill in detection, diagnoses, maintenance and repair of marine electrical systems.
* Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing complex marine electrical systems problems
