The Clinical Dietitian (Eating Disorders) provides professional methods to improve the nutritional health of a patient during the course of treatment for an eating disorder. This role works in collaboration with other key healthcare staff to provide needed evaluations, assessments, education, development of nutritional plan(s), implementation and subsequent re‑evaluation regarding nutritional therapy and requirements.
Minimum EducationBachelor’s degree along with completion of a dietetic education program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).
Licensure, Registration and/or CertificationRegistered Dietitian by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (if hired before passing the Registered Dietitian exam, must have passed the exam within 3 years allowed by the Oklahoma Provisional Licensure) and a current Dietitian License with the Oklahoma Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision (provisional license is acceptable for up to 3 years.)
Work ExperienceMinimum 6 months related experience. (New graduates can utilize internships to count as experience.)
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
Basic knowledge of eating disorder pathology. Basic counseling skills. Basic nutrition assessment and counseling skills. Effective written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. Basic computer skills. Ability to be trauma aware and experience working with co‑occurring illnesses, including but not limited to PTSD, bipolar disorder, OCD, depression, anxiety, substance use/abuse. Ability to integrate the analysis of data to discover facts or develop knowledge, concepts or interpretations, detail oriented in the examination of data.
Ability to organize and prioritize work in a timely and efficient manner.
Collaborates with and functions as the nutritional expert on an interdisciplinary treatment team to develop treatment plans; attends treatment team meetings to communicate progress of each patient and ensures dietary matters are documented. Assesses patient nutritional status and associated risk factors through patient and provider contacts; develops and communicates recommendations for a suitable diet in keeping with the treatment plan to achieve desired outcomes;
projects treatment course, refeeding and weight restoration, and identifies appropriate physical and educational goals to meet. Gives nutritional counseling based on established standards of care and practice guidelines and patient treatment goals; provides meal planning, support, and supervision, as needed. Assists in aftercare planning, helping to facilitate nutrition and diet into discharge planning. Counsels individuals on nutritional principles, dietary plans and diet modifications, food selection and preparation;
implementing various therapeutic techniques. Gathers and/or creates educational materials to provide to patients and patient support systems; conducts research to ensure most up‑to‑date information is provided to patients and patient support systems. Evaluates patient compliance with dietary interventions; reads and interprets data to ensure nutritional interventions are being applied and monitors patient weight to ensure weight markers are met and makes adjustments to the treatment plan, as needed.
Conducts responsibilities in accordance with the standards set by applicable federal and state laws, policies and procedures, and applicable professional standards and codes of ethics.
The carrying out of non‑routine procedures under constantly changing conditions, in conformance with general instructions from supervisor.
Working RelationshipWorks directly with patients and/or customers. Works with internal and/or external customers via telephone or face to face interaction. Works with other healthcare professionals and staff.
