Salary and Benefits
Newly appointed Border Patrol Officers can expect an annual base salary of $49,739 to $89,518, with potential for additional pay based on location. This role offers promotional opportunities through a career ladder structure. Additionally, agents are eligible for a range of federal benefits including health insurance, retirement plans, and generous annual leave.
Recruitment and Retention Incentives
- Up to $20,000 recruitment incentive for new officers, disbursed upon successfully completing training and accepting prioritized locations.
- Potential for up to $40,000 in retention incentives over the first four years, ensuring your commitment is recognized.
Key Responsibilities
Your role will involve protecting the American public by enforcing laws at our borders. Duties typically include:
- Detecting and questioning individuals suspected of immigration and customs violations.
- Apprehending undocumented individuals and smugglers through surveillance operations.
- Patrolling borders and waterways using various government vehicles.
- Conducting thorough inspections at checkpoints.
- Utilizing technical equipment for monitoring and surveillance purposes.
Qualifications
To qualify for the GL-5 level, candidates must meet one of the following:
- One year of general work experience demonstrating decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
- A combination of relevant experience and education.
For the GL-7 level, applicants should possess one year of specialized experience in law enforcement or hold a relevant bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement.
Additional Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be under the age of 40 at the time of selection unless exempt due to prior service.
- Must complete a six-month training at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico.
