Job Summary

In this role, you'll perform daily work activities with general supervision. Work activities to be performed include computer aided drafting to prepare maps, sketches, schematics and other engineering related drawings. The position includes associated clerical work to properly manage and document the work activities performed, as per AEP requirements for the position.

AEP is seeking talented and motivated Designers to become an integral part of our transmission engineering team.

What You’ll Do
  • Utilize computer-aided design software, including Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD and PLS-CADD to prepare and maintain high-quality maps, sketches, schematics, and engineering-related drawings.
  • Demonstrate design expertise with a focus on quality and compliance, while working under direct to moderate supervision.
  • Coordinate daily work routines to ensure efficient production and contribute to the overall success of projects.
  • Create, revise, and maintain comprehensive engineering records and material/property equipment documentation.
  • Gather essential information through various sources, including field notes, vendor catalogs, and site visits, to inform your work.
  • Perform necessary calculations to ensure accuracy in all assigned tasks.
  • Review and check work performed by peers to maintain the highest standards of accuracy and compliance with company methods.
  • Work alongside various departments to ensure safety and efficiency in all operations.
  • Assess designs for strength and conformity to accepted standards and integrate vendor specifications into your work.
  • Prepare estimates and requisitions as needed, ensuring budget adherence.
  • Provide guidance and training to junior employees, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment.
  • Actively promote and participate in our Accident Prevention and Safety and Health programs.
  • Uphold corporate policies and demonstrate ethical behavior in all aspects of your work.

This position is posted at multiple grade levels and offers a range of opportunities for advancement. The minimum qualifications outlined below apply to the Designer level, the necessary educational, skill and experience requirements increase for higher level Designers.

What We’re Looking For

Associate degree in applied science (AAS) drafting and computer aided design (CAD) or in civil, electrical or mechanical engineering technology, with one (1) to two (2) years of relevant equivalent experience.

Work Experience (without AAS degree) requirement: high school graduate and six (6) years of experience in electric utility and/or related industrial drafting and/or computer aided drafting work.

Other Must Haves
  • Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD
  • Proficiency in Vault
  • Familiarity with PLS-CADD
  • Must be available to work overtime, as required.
  • Travel requirements are expected 10% and not greater than 50% of the time.
  • Must be familiar with conventional drafting symbols and drafting methods and ability to distinguish colors.
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • Must meet all vehicle operation requirements as designated by federal and/or state law.
  • Occasional overnight travel to and work within a substation or power plant environment in obedience to all safety regulations and use of personal protection equipment.
