Job Description

Centrally located within the heart of California, Adventist Health Tulare has been serving the Central Valley since 2018. It is a 108‑bed acute care hospital with an emergency department and provides primary and specialty care services to best serve our community. Tulare offers a geographically diverse region with year‑round outdoor recreation such as camping, hiking, water and snow skiing, fishing and boating.

It is within an hour’s travel time to Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, and features a great cost of living with close‑knit communities.

Job Summary

Provides unit‑based leadership working collaboratively with the Nurse Manager, Director, Physicians, and staff. Supervises and directs the activities of nursing and ancillary personnel using professional and supervisory discretion and judgment. Ensures patients receive cost‑effective, professional care that results in positive outcomes and high satisfaction while maintaining the highest level of patient safety. Assesses and takes steps to improve the quality of patient experience.

Essential Functions
  • Provides unit‑based leadership in the development and provision of clinical services. Supervises and directs unit personnel. Initiates and coordinates individual and team conferences with health team members, patients, and families to revise care plans for optimal, individualized patient care. Directs and monitors personnel in patient care activities to ensure adequate care and quality of work. Participates in patient care as needed.
  • Fosters an environment of patient and family centered care with special attention to cultural diversity and personal needs. Rounds to oversee patient care needs, introduces self to patients and families, solicits feedback on nursing services, and provides interventions or systems to address patient care across the continuum. Develops strategies with the Nurse Manager/Director to improve customer satisfaction for patients, families, and physicians.

    Investigates and resolves patient care and operational issues as needed and recommends policy/procedure changes based on standards.
  • Ensures compliance with Patient Safety Goals as identified by The Joint Commission, hospital policy, Quality Measures, and Patient Safety initiatives through unit management and participation in hospital Performance Improvement (PI) Teams. Works closely with the clinical team to implement systems, programs, and staff development activities to meet patient, family, and physician needs. Provides ongoing assessment of department operations and patient care processes for improvement opportunities and facilitates data collection and unit quality activities.
  • Assesses staffing requirements of the unit, manages personnel based on patient acuity and skills, assigns staff to patients and activities, arranges relief for meals and breaks, reviews schedule adjustments, and evaluates performance. Coaches and disciplines personnel, when appropriate, including oral and written warnings and suspension. Participates in hiring and termination decisions and instructs new personnel on duties and assignments.
  • Works with facility services to ensure department and equipment are safe and operational. Facilitates repair of broken or malfunctioning equipment, maintains cleanliness, and informs the Director of activities, incidents, and special needs. Keeps staffing costs within the targeted budget and minimizes overtime.
