Position Highlights

The Access Control Technician, reporting to the Access Control Manager, is responsible for installing, repairing, and servicing all electronic access control, security, and ADA related equipment utilized by Housing & Residential Life, as well as maintaining the associated program databases. In addition, the technician performs administrative tasks, and provides minor servicing of department equipment. This position may be required to assist Locksmiths in electronic or mechanical locking systems repairs and maintenance as directed by supervisor.

Position requires driving University vehicles and/or golf carts.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs/modifies electronic access control system equipment, panic alarm devices, door alarms, electric and mechanical locks, and other associated devices.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs automatic door openers and associated equipment in compliance with the American with Disabilities Act.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs all surveillance camera systems utilized within Housing & Residential Life buildings.
  • Provide training for Housing staff on usage and procedures of surveillance camera system in both formal and informal settings as needed.
  • Troubleshoots electronic instruments, assemblies, and systems.
  • Tests and evaluates assembly and system performance and reliability.
  • Assists in the design and implementation of a preventative maintenance program.
  • Prepares requisitions for supplies and assists in identifying potential vendors.
  • Function as liaison for all staff and residents having technical issues with their card access into their assigned buildings.
  • Assists in the development, planning and management of an access control program.
  • Conducts all administrative data programming for daily operations within access control program.
  • Evaluates design, requirements and implementation of all access control levels required within program.
  • Utilizes access control program for troubleshooting electronic access issues, and conducts data changes as needed.
  • Maintains and modifies electronic equipment according to engineering specifications to meet technical requirements, measures parts for conformity with specifications.
  • Inventories and requisitions electronic parts and materials, ensuring adequate supply is available.
  • Assists in preparation of plans and specifications for work requirements; provides direction to outside contractors and ensures that construction and repair works are completed; prepares status of work and completed reports.
  • May be on-call to respond to Housing emergencies related to access control or electronic hardware issues.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or required to meet Housing and University goals and objectives.
  • Ensures all work conforms to local, state, and federal standards and regulations.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge and experience with electronic access control systems.
  • Knowledge in basic computer related programs (Microsoft 365, Word, and Excel).
  • Basic knowledge of ADA and Fire/Life safety codes as they apply to door hardware and electronic access control systems.
Supplemental Requirements
  • Housing & Residential Life is a security sensitive department and this position requires a finger-print criminal background check.
