Job OverviewThe Trades Maintenance Specialist I leads, participates, or operates independently providing journey‑level maintenance, repair, diagnosis, troubleshooting, construction, fabrication, and preventive maintenance for facilities and equipment at the Kino Substation.
Essential Functions- Performs skilled analysis, repair, and maintenance of equipment, systems, and vehicles;
- Leads fabrication and modifications of equipment, systems, and facilities based on verbal instructions, sketches, or technical drawings;
- Inspects, services, and maintains tools, equipment, and vehicles;
- Conducts quality‑control analysis on equipment and systems, implementing necessary corrective actions for optimal performance;
- Inspects, approves, or certifies the work of others, if certified or authorized;
- Maintains detailed records of activity, operations, service, and usage for equipment, vehicles, and systems;
- Prepares oral and written activity reports and estimates for complex operations, maintenance, and special projects;
- Prepares sketches and drawings to communicate work plans to supervisors, subordinates, and contractors;
- Coordinates activities with other units, agencies, or contractors to ensure efficient resource use and minimize disruptions;
- Monitors contractor performance, including goods and services provided;
- Conducts on‑the‑job training for employees in the assigned work‑unit;
- Manages the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with safety protocols;
- Maintains security and accountability for all tools, equipment, and materials, especially in sensitive environments;
- Ensures the use of safety and personal protective equipment and implements work‑site traffic control procedures;
- Oversees the maintenance and care of turf grasses, trees, and ornamental shrubs, including pest control, fertilization, and addressing plant health issues.
- Five (5) years of journey‑level experience in building maintenance, plumbing, HVAC, or electrical; or
- Two (2) years of experience with Pima County in a Trades Maintenance Technician or closely related position.
- Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.
- Minimum three (3) years of experience in general building maintenance, including commercial plumbing, evaporative cooling tower maintenance, and mechanical blueprints.
- Experience with troubleshooting and repairing air‑handling equipment, HVAC, and chilled water systems.
- Experience servicing and repairing commercial lighting fixtures, electrical motors, motor control centers, and performing lock‑out tag‑out procedures.
- Valid Arizona driver license required at time of application and appointment.
- Failure to obtain/maintain required license constitutes grounds for termination.
- Positions requiring a CDL require an Arizona commercial driver license with appropriate endorsement(s).
- Background checks and personal background investigation are required before hiring.
- Physical and sensory requirements include lifting up to 75 pounds, operating vehicles and equipment, working in extreme heat, humidity, cold, and handling hazardous chemicals.
