Job Description

Pima County’s Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (RWRD) is hiring a Wastewater Specialist I. This entry-level position is a great opportunity to begin your career in the wastewater industry. As a Wastewater Specialist I, you will assist in the maintenance, operation, and repair of large industrial equipment used to treat wastewater. Essential

Functions
  • Performs repairs and routine maintenance of industrial wastewater pumps, pumping systems, industrial electrical systems, and power‑generating engines.
  • Assists Wastewater Mechanics and Trades Maintenance Specialists and Technicians in non‑routine maintenance, repairs, and construction of assigned facilities and systems.
  • Assists Wastewater Mechanics in the repair and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities and wastewater conveyance systems.
  • Assists other journey‑level trade workers, such as painters, welders, electricians, and instrumentation technicians.
  • Assists specialists/technicians in the installation, maintenance, and repair of specialized equipment or controls.
  • Lifts and moves heavy materials, tools, and supplies.
  • Uses and maintains safety and personal protective equipment.
  • Performs operator‑level maintenance, servicing, and adjustments of common tools and equipment; performs worksite clean‑up following completion of jobs.
Minimum Qualifications
  • One year of experience working in industrial mechanical maintenance and repair, pumping systems, electrical systems, or power generation engine maintenance. (Work experience limited to automotive, truck, or heavy equipment maintenance is not qualifying experience.)
  • OR one year of experience with Pima County as a Maintenance Mechanic, Utility Service Worker I, Trades Maintenance Helper, or Trades Maintenance Technician in other than automotive, truck, or heavy equipment repair and/or maintenance.
  • Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum one year experience with mechanical equipment, performing repairs and routine maintenance of pumping systems, pumps, gear boxes, plumbing, pipe fitting, and compressor/blower maintenance.
  • Experience with/knowledge of maintenance repair, preventative maintenance, diagnosing, or troubleshooting in wastewater, construction, or fabrication.
  • Experience with/knowledge of using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Experience with/knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and Outlook).
Selection Procedure

Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources.

Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Supplemental Information – Licenses and Certificates

Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39‑month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination.
