Job Title: Keeper II

Department: Mammalogy & Ornithology (M&O)

Reports To: Curator

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Bargaining Unit Position

Compensation: $19.51 per hour plus a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental, vision, life and LTD insurance, FSA, HRA, 403(b) retirement plan with Roth option, complimentary membership and guest passes, paid holidays, personal business time, sick leave, and vacation.

Summary

Ensures animal welfare and institutional support by performing a wide range of animal care, enrichment, veterinary assistance, training, visitor interaction, and educational duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare food for charges by chopping, grinding, or mixing commercial feeds and forage grasses.
  • Clean and fill water containers and place food in enclosures.
  • Add vitamins, medications, or supplements to food or water as prescribed by the Veterinarian.
  • Observe animals for illnesses or injuries and notify the Curator or Veterinarians of findings.
  • Assist Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians in treatment of animals for illnesses and injuries.
  • Perform injections of prescribed medications after training from veterinary staff or Technician.
  • Clean and disinfect animal quarters.
  • Assist with developing desired animal behaviors.
  • Train co-workers and volunteers on Keeper duties.
  • Transfer Collection animals between enclosures under curatorial direction.
  • Set temperature and humidity controls of quarters as specified.
  • Answer visitor questions concerning animal habits, conservation, or museum operations.
  • Participate in educational activities such as Docent classes and media presentations.
  • Provide and create approved environmental enrichment following AZA guidelines.
  • Participate in formal presentations at ASDM or off-site (Keeper talks, theater programs, behind-the-scenes tours).
  • Complete on-line annual training as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities

There are no staff supervisory responsibilities associated with this position. However, this position may supervise and/or provide direction to volunteers assisting with Keeper duties.

Experience Required

Education and/or experience:
Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university and one to two years of related experience or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid Arizona Driver’s License or ability to obtain and a satisfactory 39-month DMV report are required.
