The Director of Nursing (DON) provides strategic and operational leadership for hospice clinical services and is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality, compliant patient care. This role ensures adherence to hospice regulations, clinical standards, and organizational policies while supporting a growing hospice organization. The Director of Nursing holds ultimate accountability for hospice nursing services and clinical practice standards and delegates operational responsibilities as appropriate.

Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Oversight:
  • Provide leadership and oversight of all hospice clinical services to ensure safe, effective, and patient-centered care.
  • Ensure clinical care delivery aligns with hospice philosophy, individualized plans of care, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support and guide ADON in day‑to‑day clinical operations and staff supervision.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and escalation point for complex patient care situations.
Staff Supervision & Performance Management:
  • Directly supervise ADON and clinical staff; establish performance expectations and accountability.
  • Conduct and oversee orientation, training, competency validation, and ongoing professional development for nursing staff.
  • Complete formal performance evaluations, coaching, and corrective action in collaboration with Human Resources.
  • Oversee staffing models, scheduling structures, and on‑call clinical coverage, with operational support from ADON.
Regulatory Compliance & Quality:
  • Ensure compliance with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Conditions of Participation (42 CFR Part 418), state hospice regulations, and accreditation standards.
  • Maintain readiness for surveys, audits, and inspections; lead corrective action planning as needed.
  • Oversee Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities related to nursing services.
  • Monitor clinical documentation quality and timeliness in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Serves as the primary nursing authority during regulatory surveys and audits.
Interdisciplinary Group &

Collaboration:
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, social work, chaplaincy, and other disciplines to support patient care.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary group (IDG) meetings and leadership forums.
  • Partner with operations, intake, compliance, and executive leadership to align clinical and operational goals.
Policy, Procedure, & Program Development:
  • Develop, review, and implement clinical policies, procedures, and standards of practice.
  • Ensure staff education and adherence to updated policies and regulatory changes.
  • Support growth initiatives, service expansion, and scalability of clinical operations.
Strategic Leadership:
  • Collaborate with the Chief Nursing Officer on clinical strategy, performance goals, and organizational initiatives.
  • Assist with budgeting, resource planning, and workforce development for nursing services.
  • Promote a culture of clinical excellence, accountability, and compassionate care.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of hospice or home health nursing experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of nursing leadership or management experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of hospice regulations, including CMS Conditions of Participation and state requirements.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
