The Critical Care Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing competent, evidence‑based care to assigned patients and oversight of licensed practical nurses/nursing assistants, as appropriate to the setting. The RN provides direct care for acutely/critically ill patients who are at high risk for actual or potential life‑threatening health problems, regardless of the setting for nursing care. High‑intensity care and vigilance are delivered while refining assessment skills and integrating data obtained from a variety of invasive and noninvasive monitoring technology.
The RN assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient education, self‑management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care. Medications and procedures are administered per established policies and guidelines, and the RN influences care outcomes by collaborating with interdisciplinary team members. Practice is evaluated in an ongoing process, using best evidence, and peers receive informal constructive feedback for improvement.
The RN fosters a safe and supportive environment conducive to professional development, contributes a nursing perspective to interdisciplinary discussions, partners with others to effect change, and shares educational findings, experiences, and ideas with peers. The RN questions clinical practices for the purpose of providing evidence‑based care and participates in activities to sustain an evidence‑based practice culture.
