Pediatric Oncology RN’s care for oncology patients by safely formulating a plan of care, initiating the plan, and evaluating the patient’s and the family’s response to care.
Position SummaryThis position assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and documents nursing care of patients in accordance with organizational policies and professional nursing practice standards. The RN is accountable for the quality of nursing services delivered by self or others under their direction. Specialized knowledge, judgment, and nursing skills are used to assess data, plan, provide and evaluate care appropriate to the patient’s physical and developmental age.
CoreFunctions
- Assess patient physical, psychological, social, spiritual, educational, developmental, cultural, and discharge planning needs. Review patient history and physical with patient/family and ensure completion within an appropriate timeframe. Review diagnostics and laboratory data; report abnormal results to physicians and other appropriate caregivers. Complete assessments and reassessments per patient need and policy.
- Formulate a plan of care, including the discharge plan, using assessment data and patient/family and healthcare team input. Initiate a plan of care based on patient-specific needs. Goals for patient are realistic, measurable, and developed in collaboration with patient/family. Consider physical, cultural, psychosocial, spiritual, age-specific, and educational needs in the plan. Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members. Review and revise the plan as patient needs change.
- Implement the plan of care through direct patient care, coordination, delegation, and supervision of the healthcare team. Provide care based on physician orders and the nursing plan of care, complying with policies, procedures, standards, and regulatory requirements. Delegate appropriately and provide nursing supervision to other licensed nurses and personnel. Promote continuity of care by accurately communicating patient status to other caregivers.
- Evaluate patient and family response to care and teaching; revise the plan of care as needed. Evaluate patient progress toward goals and expected outcomes with the health care team. Evaluate patient teaching effectiveness.
- Document assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in the patient record. Documentation is legible, timely, and in accordance with policy. Reflects objective/subjective data, nursing interventions, and patient responses. Notes physician orders accurately.
- Provide care based on best evidence; may participate in research activities within clinical practice. Participate in unit or facility shared leadership. Interact with, educate, develop, and orient personnel, patients, students, families, and visitors. Mentor and precept when appropriate.
- Contribute to societal goals through activities that enhance patient outcomes and quality indicators. Participate in professional organizations and national nursing quality improvement efforts.
- May supervise staff and workflow in certain roles.
- Interact with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, families, and external contacts to support patient health care. Work with community providers and agencies. Provide spiritual support as needed. Synthesize and prioritize data to support patient and family responses to health changes.
Current, valid RN license in the state of practice (or temporary/interim RN license or compact RN licensure). BLS certification required. Additional certifications or continuing education may be required based on area of practice. Experience in the clinical area is desired. Must maintain clinical performance competencies appropriate to the specialty area as demonstrated through annual validations. Minimum 1 year experience in an acute care hospital setting (within the past 12 months) for registry and travel acute care positions.
For home health, a valid driver’s license and active auto insurance are required. Behavioral health positions require Arizona fingerprint clearance card and criminal history affidavit.
Bachelor’s degree preferred. Professional certification preferred.
