Registered Nurse - Adult Medical Surgical 900 – Job Category:

Shift: 3 - Night Shift.

Unit 900 is an adult medical surgical floor that cares for acutely ill adults with a wide variety of medical conditions or those recovering from surgery. Conditions include diseases or disorders of the pulmonary, gastrointestinal, renal, endocrine, circulatory, and neurological systems, as well as infectious diseases and autoimmune disorders. This unit emphasizes a multidisciplinary team approach to provide safe, compassionate patient-centered care for 19 to 27 beds.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinates patient care planning with other disciplines utilizing the nursing process and critical thinking to maintain patient safety and well-being.
  • Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required, and adjusts nursing care processes to ensure safe patient care.
  • Obtains initial nursing histories, assesses patient conditions, and develops individual care plans; maintains patient documentation.
  • Receives and reviews shift and floor nurse reports; completes rounds and notes patients’ conditions.
  • Notifies the appropriate physician regarding unusual or unexpected events or problems requiring direct physician consultation.
  • Works with the interdisciplinary team to reinforce patient instructional needs with patients and families, providing informational materials and highlighting areas of concern.
  • Evaluates outcomes of patient care, consults with relevant specialists as needed, and adjusts nursing care processes to optimize patient care.
  • Identifies and resolves workplace health and safety issues.
  • Delivers appropriate, direct patient care utilizing appropriate aseptic techniques.
  • May manage IV lines, ensure sterile techniques are adhered to, and oversee patient movement and positioning for safe handling.
  • May administer pharmacological vasodilator medications for nuclear myocardial perfusion imaging in accordance with relevant competency standards.
  • Complies with policies, procedures, regulations, and standards; takes corrective action when violations occur.
  • Orients, instructs, and educates assigned personnel.
  • Adheres to TMCH values of integrity, community, compassion, and dedication; supports team members in these values.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education
:
Graduation from a qualified, nationally-accredited nursing program. Some positions may require additional training related to specific skill areas (e.g., EP) with instructional programs in intra-cardiac echocardiography and electrophysiology, including 30 ablation procedures.

Experience
:
One year of nursing experience in an acute care setting preferred. For EP assignments: two (2) years of EP experience or demonstrated competency in EP Lab procedures.

Licensure or Certification
:
Current RN licensure permitting work in the State of Arizona and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Some departments (e.g., OR, Ambulatory Surgery, Pediatrics/PICU, PACU, GI Lab) require advanced life support certifications (ACLS and PALS). Additional certification may be required for certain specialties (e.g., EP certification from International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners or equivalent).

For Hospice & Pediatrics areas, a valid Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card within 6 months of hire is required, and Crisis Prevention Instruction (CPI) may be required where applicable.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

:

  • Knowledge of direct patient care and critical care procedures required to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Knowledge of exam indicators, contraindications, and patient preparation.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with staff and physicians to ensure proper patient care.
  • Skill in reading 12-lead EKG.
  • Skill demonstrated in assigned disciplines such as EP, directly involved in patient care.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to complete routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to listen and accurately interpret others’ communication or instructions to take appropriate action.
  • Ability to speak and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and handle several variables.
