Summary

Assists in the organization and administration of the Emergency Department as the Director of Patient Care Services. Analyzes nursing and ancillary services to improve quality of patient care and attains maximum utilization of staff time and resources. Assumes additional responsibilities delegated by the Chief Nursing Officer.

The TMC Emergency Department is the busiest in Southern Arizona, serving at least 95,000 patients annually. We have 54 beds across four pods (North, South, East, West) and a staffing ratio of 1:2 to 1:4 based on acuity. The department follows the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) and handles a broad spectrum of cases, from simple lacerations to STEMI, respiratory failure, and stroke.

TMC holds certification as a Comprehensive Stroke Center and a Chest Pain Center, and has earned the Gold Plus Achievement Award in stroke programs. A Behavioral Health Observation Unit is located within the ED. We emphasize Lean Methodology and continuous process improvement, fostering teamwork and collaboration. All nurses must hold CPR, ACLS, PALS, CPI, and NIHSS certifications.

Essential Functions
  • Manage operations to deliver high‑quality 24/7 patient care and maintain an optimal work environment for staff.
  • Supervise staff, including interviewing, hiring, training, performance evaluation, and establishing performance standards.
  • Oversee allocated budgets, including projections, reconciliation, and the impact of business decisions on the bottom line.
  • Identify cost‑optimization opportunities, prioritize projects with the greatest return, and ensure timely achievement of quality results.
  • Make decisions and recommendations aligned with TMC’s strategies and financial goals.
  • Apply business acumen to improve practices and processes, leveraging inter‑function linkages and adopting a global, cross‑boundary perspective.
  • Communicate with hospital personnel, patients, medical staff, and families to ensure high‑quality care and keep department members informed of key issues.
  • Provide information or resources to other teams and functions, assisting others even when there is no immediate benefit to the department.
  • Develop contingency plans and respond to unforeseen circumstances, putting patients at the center of planning and delivery of services.
  • Establish coaching and mentoring relationships to develop staff independence, encourage innovative approaches, and assign challenging projects.
  • Implement and maintain department, unit, and hospital policies, procedures, and objectives, including quality assurance, environmental, and infection control policies, and ensure timely incident reporting.
  • Adhere to TMC organizational and department‑specific safety, confidentiality, and values.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Nursing or a related field.
  • At least 8 years of nursing experience in an acute care setting.
  • Current RN licensure permitting work in Arizona.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of critical care techniques, tools, and responses to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Knowledge of processes and procedures for rapid response, code, or stroke call.
  • Knowledge of surgical specialties and post‑operative patient care best practices.
  • Knowledge of infection control, OSHA, CMS, microbiology, and surveillance practices.
  • Skill in evaluating performance and recommending improvements.
  • Skill in developing and managing budgets.
  • Skill in creating training materials and educating staff on critical care responses.
  • Skill in maintaining computer systems and programs (e.g., NRCPR, PC File and Folder, Word, Excel, e‑mail, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Skill in communicating with staff and physicians to ensure proper patient care.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to complete routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to listen and accurately interpret instructions to take appropriate action.
  • Ability to speak and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and handle both abstract and concrete variables.
