Overview
An employee-owned structural steel fabrication company is seeking an experienced Production Manager to oversee shop floor operations. This role is pivotal in ensuring production goals are met safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards, while fostering a collaborative and safety-focused environment. The Production Manager will coordinate closely with engineering, project management, and shop personnel to deliver successful projects.
The RoleThe Production Manager is responsible for planning, supervising, and coordinating all aspects of shop production. Success in this role means meeting project timelines and quality standards, optimizing workflow, and developing a high-performing team. The manager will also lead process improvements, ensure safety compliance, and maintain strong communication across departments.
Responsibilities- Plan, organize, and oversee daily shop production operations to meet project timelines and budgets.
- Supervise welders, fitters, machine operators, and other shop personnel.
- Coordinate with production control, detailing, and project management teams to interpret blueprints and specifications.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations, quality standards, and company policies.
- Monitor workflow, optimize labor and material usage, and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Maintain equipment and oversee preventative maintenance schedules.
- Manage inventory and coordinate with procurement to ensure timely material delivery.
- Resolve production issues and lead root cause investigations for defects or delays.
- Train, coach, and evaluate team performance.
- Implement process improvement initiatives and best practices.
- 5+ years of experience in structural steel fabrication or similar manufacturing/welding industries, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
- Strong understanding of fabrication processes including cutting, fitting, welding, and finishing.
- Ability to read and interpret shop drawings and welding symbols.
- Proven leadership skills with ability to manage and motivate teams.
- Solid understanding of OSHA safety standards and shop safety best practices.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Certification in welding or fabrication.
- Familiarity or ability to learn AISC standards.
- Familiarity or ability to learn Tekla EPM/Structures ERP.
- Experience implementing Lean, Six Sigma, or similar methodologies.
- Prior experience in an employee-owned company environment.
