Jewish Family & Children's Services of Southern Arizona (JFCS) is a nonprofit, non-sectarian behavioral health agency that provides specialized therapy, counseling, and social services to the greater Tucson community. POSITION SUMMARY

The Controller, under the direction of the President and CEO, directs the budget planning process and financial accounting and reporting. This position also supports agency governance activities. This is a senior leadership position that requires great vision and leadership skills, and a commitment to continuous quality improvement.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversees the planning process, prepares budgets and forecasts and participates in the development of the strategic plan.
  • Works with program and administrative staff to analyze financial performance, prepare special studies and reports, and make corrective action recommendations, funding source reports and proposals.
  • Analyzes financial reports and advises the President and CEO and Board on desirable operation adjustments based on current agency budget and costs.
  • Directs changes in business development strategies/actions and operations, as needed, to achieve budgeted targets and growth.
  • Supervises the accounting manager and accounting department staff, including billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll.
  • Maintains the Accounting Policies and Procedures Manual, including desk instructions and flow charts. Ensures strong internal controls.
  • Maintains the accounting systems, which include chart of accounts, reporting formats, and allocation rates as well as software revisions.
  • Participates in the planning and presentation of financial reports for the Finance, Executive and Audit Committees, and the Board of Directors meeting.
  • Liaison for auditors, banks, funding sources, creditors, and regulating agencies.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the President and CEO.
WORK HOURS, SCHEDULE & FLEXIBILITY

This position often works weekdays; however there may be some evening or weekend events that will require your attendance in order to best represent the Agency. Some flexibility in scheduling exists, as long as Agency needs are adequately addressed.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be knowledgeable in the general policies of not-for-profit organization accounting and have experience working with not-for-profits with multiple funding sources.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and leadership skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Minimum of five years of supervisory and leadership experience; must be able to supervise the work of others, delegating assignments as appropriate.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines; must be flexible to changes in routine.
  • Must be computer literate; including experience with accounting software and proficiency with MS Excel.
  • At least five years accounting and/or bookkeeping experience.
  • Knowledgeable of cultural differences and be able to interact effectively with individuals of different ethnic, religious and socioeconomic groups.
  • An accounting degree or general experience in tax issues and special government reports affecting not-for-profit agencies.
  • Experience with health service agencies and medical billing issues is preferred.
