Position Summary

The Controller is a senior finance leader responsible for overseeing all accounting and financial operations of the construction business. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, compliance with regulatory requirements, and effective job cost and project financial management. The Controller partners closely with executive leadership and operations to support profitability, cash flow, and strategic decision-making.

Key Responsibilities Financial Management & Reporting
  • Oversee all accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and fixed assets
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
  • Manage the month-end and year-end close processes
  • Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls
Construction Accounting & Job Costing
  • Oversee job cost accounting, including work-in-progress (WIP) schedules and percentage-of-completion reporting
  • Partner with project managers to review job performance, cost variances, and margin trends
  • Ensure accurate revenue recognition and contract accounting
Cash Flow & Risk Management
  • Assist with cash flow forecasting, banking relationships, and credit facilities
  • Oversee billing processes, including progress billings, retainage, and lien waivers
  • Oversee the payable process, including accurate coding and timely payment of vendor invoices
  • Monitor collections and manage exposure to financial and contractual risk
Budgeting & Forecasting
  • Assist with the annual budgeting and forecasting process
  • Provide financial analysis and insights to support operational and strategic decisions
  • Develop KPIs and dashboards related to project performance and company financial health
Compliance & Audit
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including tax and licensing requirements
  • Coordinate annual audits, reviews, and tax filings with external auditors and advisors
  • Support bonding, insurance, and surety reporting requirements
Leadership & Collaboration
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting and finance team
  • Collaborate closely with operations, estimating, and executive leadership
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives across financial and operational processes
Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including construction industry experience
  • Strong knowledge of construction accounting, job costing, and WIP reporting
  • Proficiency with construction accounting software (e.g., Viewpoint, Foundation, Procore, or similar)
  • Strong leadership, communication, and analytical skills
Preferred
  • CPA or CMA designation
  • Experience working with bonding companies and sureties
  • Background in multi-entity or multi-state construction operations
