ABOUT HermosaHermosa, located approximately 75 miles south-east of Tucson, Arizona, is the only advanced mining project in the United States as of 2023 that could produce two federally designated critical minerals—manganese and zinc—as well as silver and lead. The project has the potential to help power the nation’s clean energy future, strengthen the domestic supply chain of critical minerals, grow the local economy, and improve lives in Santa Cruz County and the surrounding community for generations to come.
ABOUTTHE ROLE
The Environmental Management Intern will support environmental monitoring and program implementation including biodiversity, water quality, air quality, collection and reporting of environmental sustainability information; environmental compliance and field verification activities in accordance with applicable state and federal permits and regulations; and associated environmental management and reporting systems. This role will be based at the mine location near Patagonia, AZ.
Other key responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:
- Conduct environmental monitoring activities using field based scientific methods.
- Engage with South
32 employees, contractors and consultants to obtain and verify information relevant to South
32 environmental and sustainability reporting. - Support South
32 environmental management system implementation and improvement initiatives. - Learn and adhere to South
32 procedures and regulatory requirements. - Use appropriate mathematical and statistical methods to review and analyze monitoring data to assess risks, identify trends, and support corrective actions.
- Prepare clear and concise reports summarizing monitoring results and recommendations for improvement and risk mitigation.
- Collaborate with environmental and other professionals to support continuous improvement of programs.
- Perform routine care, maintenance, and calibration of monitoring equipment to ensure accurate and reliable data collection.
You will have experience and demonstrate capability in the following:
- Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or closely related field.
- Foundational knowledge of environmental/sustainability principles and risk management.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to summarize and interpret monitoring data.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for reporting and collaboration with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic, safety-focused environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); experience with data management systems and analysis tools is a plus.
- Commitment to workplace safety, confidentiality, and ethical standards.
