Job Summary
WSP is seeking a highly motivated Associate Water Resources Engineer to join our team in Tucson or Phoenix, AZ. Additional locations considered include Lakewood, CO and Lander, WY. The role involves providing stormwater management solutions for mining projects nationally and globally, encompassing hydraulic modeling, drainage and civil design, fieldwork, project planning, communication, data analysis, drawing support, permitting, and construction support.
Key Responsibilities- Perform specific portions of broader projects under the supervision of an experienced engineer
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver stormwater solutions for mining facilities
- Conduct hydrologic and hydraulic modeling and drainage/civil design
- Prepare detailed calculation packages with proper documentation and references
- Assist with the development of technical reports, drawings, and specifications
- Design reservoirs, ponds, breach analysis, outlet works, and spillways
- Design channels and erosion control structures including concrete, riprap, articulate concrete block, fabric‑formed concrete, and baffle blocks
- Work with CAD designers to produce drawings from concept to construction‑level design, including grading, drainage plans, profiles, details, and sections
- Implement work in accordance with agreed scope, budget, and schedule
- Interact professionally with clients, subcontractors, and partners
- Apply critical thinking to solve complex problems
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on design, permitting, operational optimization, and closure assessments for large mining operations
- Exercise responsible decision‑making regarding company resources and conduct, complying with WSP’s Code of Conduct
- Occasionally assist with additional responsibilities as required by business needs
- Participate in development of probabilistic, dynamic systems‑based water balance and water quality models for the mining industry under guidance of senior modelers
- Support project teams with data analysis and interpretation
- Perform other tasks as required by business needs
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering
- Engineer in Training certification and desire to pursue a professional engineering license
- 1‑3 years of relevant experience in water resources engineering, including design and modeling
- Proficiency with industry software (e.g., HEC‑RAS, HEC‑HMS, AutoCAD Civil 3D)
- Knowledge of stormwater evaluation and design engineering principles
- Ability to perform detailed technical computations and calculations
- Experience producing high‑quality technical deliverables, such as memorandums and reports
- Excellent attention to detail and error recognition
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both technical and non‑technical
- Ability to work independently and in team environments
- Flexibility to adapt to project schedules beyond typical work hours
- Willingness to travel as project needs dictate
- Proven commitment to workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety, and anti‑harassment policies
- Experience with frequency storm and probable maximum precipitation hydrologic analyses
- Experience with hydraulic analyses and design of channels, culverts, bridges, flow measurement, and flood mapping
- Experience with data analysis using R, VBA, MATLAB, or Python for large datasets
- Experience in interpreting hydrological and climate data
- Experience analyzing and processing geospatial data with ArcGIS or AutoCAD
- Experience with remote sensing data and gridded climate datasets
- Master’s Degree in Engineering focusing on Hydrology/Hydraulics
- Previous work experience in the mining sector
- Field or construction experience, basic First Aid, CPR, and/or MSHA training

CompensationExpected salary (Colorado only): $67,600 – $95,200. WSP reserves the right to offer higher or lower compensation based on qualifications.
