Position DescriptionResponsible for planning, organizing, budgeting, and directing overall operations of specific engineering areas. Leads design and construction of substation-related projects, reviews specifications, and acts as project engineer. Collaborates with multiple engineering sections to ensure projects meet federal, state, and local standards.
Responsibilities- Supervise, coordinate, and lead the work group, ensuring safety, quality control, staff scheduling, performance reviews, and employee relations.
- Develop designs and evaluate alternatives for substation projects ranging from 4 kV up to 500 kV, including layout, equipment specification, wiring, cable design, and commissioning checkout.
- Prepare detailed design specifications for procurement activities.
- Track NERC facility ratings.
- Coordinate with Substation, Protection, Communications, Automation, CIP, and Metering engineering sections on schematic drawings and equipment design.
- Collaborate with Civil, Transmission, and Structural Engineers to determine equipment locations and structural sizing.
- Evaluate vendors and recommend equipment awards that optimize cost and reliability.
- Assist with budgetary estimates for capital budget incorporation.
- Monitor project schedules and coordinate events throughout design, construction, testing, and energizing phases.
- Initiate work orders and track expenditures for capital budget projects.
- Lead meetings on project status and communicate effectively with all personnel levels.
- Provide departmental training on installation, operation, and maintenance of substation equipment.
- Direct the work of assigned engineers or other employees.
- Consult on technical problems encountered during assignments.
- Report to the Manager, Engineering and perform additional assignments as requested.
- Provide services to affiliates as required.
- Practice and support management principles, policies, and programs consistently.
- Assume fiduciary responsibility for operating the business and recommend cost‑improvement measures.
- Administer the Performance Management program uniformly and effectively.
- Manage personnel functions, including recruiting, job description approval, salary classification, and placement decisions.
- Ensure legal compliance and investigate employee complaints.
- Promote professional development and career planning for staff.
- Address disciplinary or performance issues according to company policy.
- Plan day‑to‑day operations, estimate personnel needs, and assign work.
- Evaluate team structure for continual improvement of efficiency and effectiveness.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering with relevant coursework, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proficient in time management, project organization, and technical analysis.
- Strong leadership skills and ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups.
- Broad business knowledge, including financial analysis, project management, and utility standards.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook); experience with Maximo, WinIGS, or Microsoft Project is a plus.
- Assign work and evaluate status to ensure satisfactory progress and completion.
- Three to five years of relevant experience, preferably in an electric utility engineering role, with prior supervisory experience preferred.
- Oversee activities to optimize cost and efficiency.
- Act as a technical mentor and perform engineering work as required.
- Preferred qualifications:
Arizona Professional Engineer (P.E.) registration, Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Business Administration. - Eight or more years of professional experience in an electric utility engineering role, with prior supervisory experience required.
