The School of Geography, Development, and Environment (SGDE), in partnership with the Arizona Institute for Resilience (AIR), invites applications for a 12-month appointment Career Track (Non-Tenure Eligible) Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice with scholarly, field, and teaching expertise in environmental and community resilience and adaptation. This faculty position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to both academic and professional training in the emerging field of environmental and community resilience.
Strong candidates for this position hold a PhD in Geography or closely related field, bring a demonstrated commitment to supporting and engaging students and have strong pedagogical abilities for experiential and applied learning.
This position will be responsible for developing and teaching several new courses in a Master of Resilience Practice program, including courses which prepare students for success in project planning, and in communicating impact of their capstone project. Additionally, this faculty member will design and teach an undergraduate course and a graduate course, respectively, based on their specific field of scholarly expertise.
In addition to teaching, this student- and community-centered position will serve as the academic advisor for students in the Master of Resilience Practice program, and serve as the primary liaison between capstone partner organizations and the program.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and teach one masters-level course in a topic related to resilience, international or community development, and/or climate adaptation specific to the candidate’s expertise
- Develop and teach one masters-level field course on Sonoran Desert resilience strategies
- Teach one undergraduate course for Geography majors related to the candidate’s expertise
- Teach three masters-level courses which prepare students in the Master of Resilience Practice program in collaboratively planning their capstone project, completing capstone projects in small student teams, and in communicating the impact of their capstone project after its completion
- Serve as the academic advisor for students in the Master of Resilience Practice program
- Serve as the primary coordinator between capstone partners (community, government, or private organizations) and the Master of Resilience Practice program
- Contribute to advancing the academic mission of SGDE and AIR through departmental service and outreach activities, including potential collaborations on grants, awards, partnerships or other activities
Qualifications
:
- Ph.D. in Geography or a closely related discipline; OR
- Master's degree in Geography or a closely related discipline and five or more years of professional experience related to environmental and community resilience, adaptation, or sustainable development.
Preferred:
- Ph.D. in Geography or a closely related discipline and two or more years professional experience related to environmental and community resilience, adaptation, or sustainable development.
- Experience with dynamic teaching across differing modalities (e.g., online asynchronous, live online, hybrid, face-to-face).
- Experience with new course development.
