Academic Advising Professional III, Chemistry & Biochemistry

Join the College of Science and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry as an Academic Advising Professional III. You will serve as the major campus frontline advisor for students majoring in Chemistry or Biochemistry and assist with college-wide projects to enhance student success and retention.

Duties & Responsibilities Academic Advising
  • Creates and presents academic and program information to new first‑year and transfer students and their guests at New Student Orientation.
  • Assists students with course planning to meet academic requirements and/or career preparation.
  • Evaluates transfer credits from other institutions for applicability to the degree program.
  • Interprets and advises students on university, college, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Identifies or evaluates options for students who must petition for an exception to a course or program requirement; makes approved adjustments to a student’s program of study.
  • Monitors academic progress using appropriate dashboards and reports; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas, conducts student outreach, and refers students to appropriate campus resources as needed.
  • Assesses students’ academic, career, and personal development stages to promote growth and recommends suitable developmental tasks and engagement opportunities such as internships, clubs, volunteer work, and undergraduate research.
  • Assists students in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals; refers students to additional career counseling services as needed.
College of Science Office of Student Services (One Day per Week)
  • Provides drop‑in assistance, triage, and referral to College of Science majors as part of a small team.
  • Assists the College with projects focused on student success and retention, such as seminars, workshops, or other activities/events for student onboarding, community building, academic recovery, engagement, and recognition.
  • Assists junior advisors with training and skill‑building.
  • Assists the College with screening and processing of petitions for students requesting exceptions to university policy.
Administrative
  • Creates and maintains materials that help students navigate their degree paths, such as four‑year plans and course checklists.
  • Assists with manual enrollment into department courses, including research, preceptorship, and internships for university credit.
  • Processes degree checks and audits for students planning to graduate.
  • Participates in campus‑wide committees and special projects to develop professionally and stay up‑to‑date on advising practices.
  • Provides input to faculty‑led undergraduate committees such as curriculum, scholarships, assessment, and student awards.
  • Maintains student files, records, and database; documents all pertinent information in Trellis (Advising Notes) and processes program/plan changes in UAccess.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • General knowledge of student advising, development, and career planning principles.
  • Knowledge of FERPA regulations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Problem‑solving and critical‑thinking abilities.
  • Proficiency in student information systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Ability to identify student needs and recommend appropriate resources.
  • Ability to build rapport with students.
  • Ability to evaluate academic progress and identify barriers to success.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in a team; self‑motivated.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience advising in higher education, with a focus on science majors.
  • Experience with program management and curriculum development.
  • Familiarity with the University of Arizona student information systems (Trellis, UAccess, UpTrack).
