Position

Summary

The Obstetric Clinical Nurse performs nursing care procedures requiring professional knowledge and consideration of specific patient conditions and treatments, working independently. Assists physicians and midwives during examinations and procedures, providing comprehensive, family‑centered nursing care to mothers and babies during antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods.

Qualifications

Required

Education:

  • Associate or Bachelor Degree in Nursing

License / Certification:

  • Valid, current, full and unrestricted Professional Nursing License in the United States (including Puerto Rico and territories)
  • Current certification in:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association
    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – American Heart Association
    • AWHONN Intermediate EFM Certification (within 6 months of hire)
    • AWHONN Advanced EFM Certification (within 6 months of hire)
    • National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) (within 6 months of hire)
    • STABLE Certification (within 1 year of hire)
    • Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) (within 1 year of hire)

Experience:

  • Minimum of 1 year of OB nursing experience (antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, nursery, labor and delivery)

Other Skills & Abilities:

  • Positive working relationships with others
  • High ethical standards and no history of complaints
  • Reliability and punctuality
  • Knowledge of normal growth, development, life cycle changes, disease entities, pain management, pharmaceuticals, infection control, and safety precautions
  • Complete patient sitter competency training (upon hire)
  • Successful completion of background and reference checks
  • Successful completion of fingerprint clearance, physical examination, and other screenings
  • Submission of accurate employment‑related documents
Mental and Physical Effort

Physical: Requires prolonged standing, walking, talking, sitting, use of hands, bending, kneeling, reaching, lifting up to 50 lbs frequently and up to 100 lbs when caring for patients; proper body mechanics and equipment use. Must hear alarms, client calls, and pages; adequate vision for close and distant tasks. Must perform repetitive motions.

Mental: Requires tact, sensitivity, prioritization, good judgment, coordination, team building, and flexibility.

Environmental: Occasional exposure to fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, electric shock risk; moderate noise level; work around infectious diseases.

Responsibilities – Essential Functions
  • Develop individualized patient care plans and evaluate them periodically.
  • Interview patients and families; consult with physicians, CNM, and staff to determine care needs.
  • Carry out treatments and procedures per scope of practice.
  • Provide guidance, direction, and training to ancillary nursing and other personnel as team leader.
  • Maintain health records and document observations, interventions, and therapeutic measures accurately and timely.
  • Maintain professional knowledge through continuing education, staff meetings, workshops, and nursing committees.
  • Provide counseling and teaching to patients and families on preventive, curative, and rehabilitative measures.
  • Ensure proper PPE is worn at all times and perform safe donning/doffing procedures.
  • Coordinate cleaning and decontamination processes for communicable diseases.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
