The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Clinical Nurse provides professional nursing care for acutely and critically ill patients in accordance with physician orders and established policies, procedures, and philosophy. This role requires a highly technical and ongoing monitoring environment. The nurse works within the scope of a Registered Nurse (RN) as defined by the Arizona State Board of Nursing.
QualificationsEducation
- Associate Degree in Nursing.
Certifications
- Valid unrestricted Professional Nursing License (RN) in any U.S. state, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.
- Current certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – American Heart Association (completed within six months of hire).
- Trauma Care After Resuscitation (TCAR) – completed within six months of hire.
- National Institutes of Health – NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) – completed within six months of hire.
Experience
- One (1) year of critical care nursing experience, or
- Two (2) years of nursing experience in Adult Med/Surg, with at least one year in critical care.
- Completion of a Critical Care program within the last 12 months is required if no prior critical care experience is present.

- Pharmacology knowledge, especially vasopressors and emergency medication titration.
- Infection control procedures and safety precautions.
- Completion of Patient Sitter Competency Training upon hire.
- Successful completion of background, reference, fingerprint clearance, and physical examinations.
- Submission of all required documentation with truthful information.
Physical: Ability to stand, walk, talk, sit, observe, and handle equipment for prolonged periods; lift up to 100 lbs; use proper body mechanics. Visual acuity to see both near and distant with color awareness.
Mental: Prioritization, good judgment, sensitivity to stressful situations, teamwork, and willingness to assist colleagues.
Environmental: Working around fumes, toxins, chemical hazards, electric shock risk, moderate noise, and infectious disease exposure.
ResponsibilitiesEssential Functions
- Direct observation and care of ICU patients under supervision.
- Develop individualized care plans and participate in patient care coordination.
- Interview patients and families; coordinate with providers and team members; provide counseling and education.
- Maintain accurate health records and documentation.
- Maintain expertise in critical care and engage in continuing education, committees, and performance improvement activities.
- Respond promptly to adverse signs and symptoms, including life-saving procedures.
- Participate in quality assurance, infection control, and standards of care development.
- Monitor equipment, adjust settings, and interpret electronic displays.
- Delegate tasks and supervise unlicensed and licensed care providers as needed.
- Charge nurse duties when assigned; float to other units as necessary.
- Electronic health record data entry.
- Ensure proper PPE usage and perform donning/doffing safely.
- Complete routine cleaning and decontamination processes.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
